Rumor: the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 will feature dual drivers, tuning by Devialet

Peter, 15 June 2022

Huawei is close to launching the second generation of its flagship TWS buds. The Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 are expected to go official this month and will probably carry a €200 price tag (same as the original FreeBuds Pro).

One major upgrade will be the switch to dual drivers – with one driver handling the bass and another the mids and highs, the second gen buds will deliver frequency response range of 14Hz to 48,000Hz.

Huawei has reportedly partnered with French audio technology firm Devialet to tune the audio. The buds will come with a Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification, promising high quality sound over Bluetooth. There is also something called a Triple Adaptive Equalizer, which will give finer control over the sound.

Another major upgrade on these buds will be the active noise cancellation (ANC), which will drop noise by 47dB . For comparison, the original FreeBuds Pro advertised up to 40dB cancellation. To pull this off, the second gen buds will use three microphones and AI algorithms.

In terms of battery life, the new design is less efficient and will offer up to 6.5 hours of playback with ANC off, down from 8 hours. The charging case will account for the difference, however, so the total listening time will still be 30 hours.

The new buds are gaining basic water resistance with an IP54 rating, meaning they are protected against splashes, but won’t survive immersion. That is still better durability than the original Pro buds.

The Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 will be available in three colors: Blue Silver, Frost Silver and Ceramic White.

Dual drivers are -potentially- better, but it is problematic in compact wireless earbuds. Samsung did it with the Buds+ and those doesn't sound anything similar to the typical AKG signature Samsung normality use.
