HMD Connect is shutting down in December, the global roaming service was just over 2 years old

Peter, 19 October 2022

HMD Connect launched in early 2020 and made it easy go stay connected while roaming – users could pick between SIM and eSIM options and 14-day data plans for 120 countries.

Now HMD has quietly revealed that Connect is shutting down. The service will stop operating on December 15 this year, meaning that you will lose access to any data plans you still had active. The company will stop selling data plans after November 15, so you can still pick up a data plan if you have travel abroad planned in the next month or two. Any credit remaining after December 15 will be refunded.

What happened? There is no press release to explain, just an update on the HMD Connect page. In hindsight, launching a roaming service in early 2020 was very poor timing as global travel started shutting down due to the pandemic. Most restrictions have been lifted by now, but it may have been too late for the service.

By the looks of it, HMD Mobile will remain in operation, but that is an MVNO carrier based in the UK (and cover EU travel).

HMD also has enterprise connectivity services, they seem unaffected as well. For example, HMD Connect Pro offers roaming data plans for Internet of Things devices in over 180 countries and 600 mobile networks
