Tecno looking to partner with established lens maker for future products

Peter, 27 December 2022

Tecno quickly grew to become a Top 10 smartphone brand globally and most recently it revealed its ambitions to enter the premium market are no secret, you may not have noticed that the company is also positioning itself as a leader in smartphone camera innovation. And it's looking to partner with some of the photography industry's big names in taking the next step.

We spoke with Tecno marketing director Mr. Laury on the occasion of the Phantom X2 launch: “For the Phantom X2 series we had consultation with the professional photographer, Rankin. He is well-known for having taken portraits of people like The Queen and a lot of Hollywood celebrities. He gave us some valuable insight and recommendations for how to create the best portrait camera:”.

A talk with Tecno: the company is working on innovations for smartphone cameras

The end result is one of the best portrait cameras we have tested yet – one with a quirky retractable design, which combines a large sensor and a wide aperture that result in lovely natural bokeh without computational trickery.

That camera is on the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro, which we reviewed recently. But Tecno isn't stopping there. The company confirmed it's having talks with established lens makers for the development of future products.

Tecno mentioned no names, but we will undoubtedly hear more about it in the upcoming months. Hasselblad, Leica and Zeiss are already partnering with smartphone makers so we can rule those out, but there's no shortage of big names remaining.
