Google drops software support for Pixel 4a

Yordan, 20 September 2023

Google did not push a September software update to the Pixel 4a (the non-5G version), confirming its decision to terminate support for the smartphone officially. The phone was scheduled to receive a final update in August 2023, and now, as the new package is out to newer Pixels, we have an official confirmation there's not going to be an extension.

Google drops software support for Pixel 4a

The Pixel 4a was a rather unimpressive smartphone, and when we reviewed it, we were puzzled why Google released it as a mild upgrade of the Pixel 3a just weeks ahead of the Pixel 5 launch in 2020.

When Android 14 Developer Preview and Public Beta started reaching devices, the Pixel 4a was not on the list, and users couldn't participate in the testing process, as Google never intended to update the phone in the first place.

It is important to distinguish the Pixel 4a from the Pixel 4a 5G, which are two completely different devices. The latter is eligible for Android 14, units received beta software, and it will keep getting software updates for one more year, while the major OS update should be final.
