Rumor: MediaTek is offering discounts to Samsung if it uses more of its chips

Samsung uses a mix of chipset suppliers for its phones – Qualcomm, MediaTek and Samsung itself – each in different proportions. According to one tipster, MediaTek is negotiating to become a bigger part of the Galaxy series and is trying to lure in Samsung with special pricing.

Specifically, it wants to extend the use of MediaTek chips for Samsung’s budget models. With the exception of the Galaxy M53, most MediaTek powered Galaxys are in the A3x range or lower.

Budget phones naturally have the lowest bills of material, so a price cut on the chipset (one of the priciest components) sure sounds nice. And it can be used as leverage against Qualcomm, if it tries to raise its prices.

MediaTek also has competitive mid-range and flagship chipsets too, but there is no mention of those getting into the mix.

Samsung recently reintroduced Exynos on the high-end with the Galaxy S24 and S24+ and has a years-long exclusivity deal with Qualcomm to buy “for Galaxy” chipsets, so it might not want to add a third supplier for the pricier Galaxy lines.
