HTC 2009 roadmap gets updated, now we’ve got the specs

05 March, 2009

It didn’t take long for the HTC 2009 roadmap to get updated with some specs of the upcoming HTC handsets. Only two months ago we showed you their photos and now it’s time to take a closer look.

HTC Whitestone

So without wasting any time, we'll start with HTC Whitestone. Equipped with a kickstand and dual-mode GSM/CDMA support, Whitestone will pack a 528 MHz Qualcomm 7600 processor, 512MB of ROM and 256MB RAM and will run on Windows Mobile 6.x. The device is also expected to have a 3.6" WVGA display, 5-megapixel autofocus camera and GPS with A-GPS support. The guys from Verizon will start retailing it by September.

HTC Firestone

Another intriguing device is HTC Firestone which happens to be the real successor of the popular Touch HD. It sports the same 3.6" WVGA display of the Whitestone and will also offer GPS with A-GPS. The amount of memory is the same as well. Now, here come the differences.

The 3G-capable Firestone will be equipped with a 600 MHz Qualcomm 8250 processor and will run on Windows Mobile 6.5. This is going to be the first HTC to have an 8-megapixel autofocus snapper and will have its debut in August.

HTC Thoth

HTC Thoth is the successor of the HTC Advantage 7500 (also known as HTC Athena) and the Advantage X7510.

The Thoth is expected to come with a 4.8" WVGA screen (slightly smaller compared to the 5-inch VGA one of the original Athena). A 5-megapixel camera, 512MB ROM, 256MB RAM and Windows Mobile 6.5 will also be onboard.

The most exciting feature, though, is the fast processor - the 1GHz Qualcomm 8250 Snapdragon chipset. Expect it in September.

HTC Twin

Next comes the Twin - a dual-mode GSM/CDMA smartphone, which has a 2.8-inch VGA screen. There is also a 3.2-megapixel autofocus snapper and GPS with A-GPS. The WinMo 6.1 Pro device will be equipped with 2 processors (528 MHz Qualcomm 7501A and TI ARM-based LoCosto), 512MB ROM and 256MB of RAM memory. China Telecom will start selling it by July.

HTC Maple and HTC Cedar

The last two mobile phones happen to be successors of the QWERTY-keyboarded Excalibur (the HTC S620). Like the original, the Maple and the Cedar will both sport QWERTY keyboards. They will also have 2.4" displays, 2 megapixel cameras and WinMo 6.1 Standard.

Along with the 256MB ROM and 128MB RAM comes a the 528 MHz Qualcomm 7225 processor. Maple supports GSM/3G and the Cedar is for CDMA networks. The HTC Maple is expected to hit the market in May while the Cedar (Maple's Verizon version) will appear on the shelves by June.

The other HTC devices mentioned in the leaked 2009 Roadmap have already been announced at this year's MWC so you can check out our first impressions.

Summa summarum, the HTC 2009 roadmap somehow fails to impress for now - the most interesting device is HTC Firestone, but it won't be out before August. In the same time, the only device using the highly interesting Snapdragon is the HTC Thoth, which is anything but a mobile phone. We also couldn't help but get surprised by the planned use of WinMo Standard - an OS that have lost its competitive edge long ago.

Update: Two weeks later some new info leaked regarding several new HTC devices, which are expected to show up by the end of 2009.

Those include the HTC Star and the HTC SuperStar which both will be running on WinMo 6.5 and will feature 512 MB of ROM and 256 MB of RAM.

While the HTC Star will sport a 600 MHz Qualcomm 8250 processor and a 3.6" WVGA display, the HTC SuperStar caught our eye with its nVidia AP16 CPU (at 600 MHz) and a 3.7-inch display with WVGA resolution.

Sadly, we've got no images to show you yet.

Next on the list are the HTC Chief W and the HTC Captain, which share an identical feature pack including Qualcomm 7225 CPUs at 528 MHz, 256 MB ROM, 128 MB RAM and 2.4-inch displays sporting QVGA resolution. Both are expected to run on Windows Mobile 6.1.

The last one is the HTC Tachi which is about to have two CPUs - a Qualcomm 7501A (at 528 MHz) and a TI LoCosto. It should also pack 512 MB of ROM and 256 MB of RAM memory as well as a 2.8" display with VGA resolution. Reportedly, this one will run on WinMo 6.1 Pro.
