New Nokia 2730 classic, 2720 fold and 7020 to hit emerging markets

18 May, 2009

Nokia have prepared a set of three emerging markets phone meant to make the most out of services such as Nokia Life Tools and Ovi Mail. The Nokia 2730 classic, 2720 fold and 7020 are all based on S40 and their primary focus is providing easy internet and email access to people that have no computers.

The 3G-packing Nokia 2730 classic is the best equipped among those entry-level handsets. The bar-shaped handset is offering dual-band UMTS and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support. It also sports a 2 megapixel camera, FM radio and Bluetooth v2.0.

Some of the other features of the Nokia 2730 classic include a microSD card slot, a 3.5mm standard audio jack and Nokia maps application which comes preinstalled. The display on the handset measures 2" and comes with QVGA resolution.

Piced at 80 euro (with 1GB memory card included in the retail package) the Nokia 2730 classic is expected to start shipping in Q3 2009.

The other interesting handset is the stylish clamshell Nokia 7020. Targeted at users who don't want a tight budget to compromise their mobile phone's looks, it has a tad less features than the 2730 classic - with 3G being the most evident omission.

Sporting some nice metal finishes, the Nokia 7020 comes with a 2.2" QVGA display plus a secondary more basic external unit. It pack FM radio, a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and EDGE and a mictoSD card slot.

A built-in accelerometer enables some cool functionality like tap-for-time. Social networking integration is also duly covered, which might be a nice thing for teenage adopters.

Nokia 7020 is expected to begin shipping in the Q4 2009 for an estimated retail price of 90 euro before subsidies and taxes. It will have four different color version - Graphite, Hot Pink, Varm silver and Blue.

The final new name today is the Nokia 2720 fold - a clamshell phone with a decent design and an attractive price tag.

It terms of features all it has to offer are a 1.3 megapixel camera, FM radio and dual-band GSM/GPRS support.

The Nokia 2720 fold is expected to begin shipping in two color versions (Black and Deep Red) in the third quarter of 2009. Its estimated retail price of 55 euro before subsidies and taxes sounds quite a bargain but bear in mind that it comes with an extremely Spartan retail package (there isn't even a handsfree included in the box).

One of the key selling points for those new devices is their Ovi Email and Nokia Life Tools integration. As you might remember Nokia Life Tools is a service providing online agriculture information, education services plus a pinch of entertainment to supplement the whole thing. Started back when the Nokia 2323 classic and 2330 classic were announced is attempts to help overcome the information constraints and enabling people to make informed decisions.

Ovi Mail webmail service attempts to deliver a simple and intuitive interface and advanced features like drag-and-drop and a preview inbox widget. It also offers a low bandwidth to cut down data transfer charges plus the usual anti spam and virus protection stuff. The storage offered for each Ovi Mail account is up to 1GB. The most important thing about Ovi Mail is that you can setup a new email account directly from your Nokia handset without the need of ever using a computer.

Those newly introduced handsets are obviously an attempt from Nokia to regain some ground in the entry level handset, where Samsung are putting in quite a fight recently. In terms of global financial crisis developing markets seem to be becoming as important as ever and Nokia are obviously quite aware of that fact.
