Nokia and Samsung extend cross-license patent agreement

Michail, 23 January 2023

Nokia and Samsung have reached a new agreement on 5G patent technology which will see the Korean tech giant use Nokia’s “fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies”. The two companies previously inked a similar deal, which expired at the end of 2022.

Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry, and we are delighted to have reached an amicable agreement with them. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies. - Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies

The new agreement will see Samsung make royalty payments to Nokia over a multi-year period with a start date of January 1, 2023. The actual terms of the agreement remain confidential.

Nokia currently holds over 20,000 patent families with 4,500 deemed essential to 5G technology. The company has invested over €130 billion in R&D since 2000.
