Nokia announces XpressMusic 5320 and 5220

22 Apr, 2008

Today Nokia officially announced two new music-centered devices - the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic is a S60 UI Symbian smartphone, while the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic is an untraditionally designed candy bar based on the S40 user interface.

The Nokia 5320 XpressMusic is a 3G/HSDPA-enabled bar shaped smartphone. Being a music-oriented device, the Nokia 5320 offers dedicated external music controls, stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), a stereo FM radio and a 3.5mm standard audio jack. Nokia say that there is also a dedicated audio chip for better audio quality (which otherwise is a traditional weakness in Nokia phones, we hope they've borrowed the chip from Samsung).

A microSD memory card slot allows you to plug a memory card of up to 8GB in capacity (a 512MB or 1GB card is included in the retail package). A new music feature is the Nokia Say and Play application which allows users to voice control the music player.

Beside music, mobile gaming is also in the focus with the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic. In this case it's N-Gage gaming we are talking about. The 8-way navigational D-pad is optimized for the purpose and beside that you also get a landscape gaming experience on the 2-inch 16M color TFT display with QVGA resolution.

A 2 megapixel snapper (no auto focus) and a microUSB connectivity port add to the feature list. Support for a number of online services will also come preinstalled - Macromedia Flash Lite 3.0, Windows Live, Flickr, Yahoo Go!, and Yahoo Messenger are all in. There is also a SMS reader which does text-to-speech conversion for you.

The Nokia 5320 XpressMusic will be available black/blue or black/red as previous Xpress Music handsets and it's supposed to start shipping in Q3 2008 for around 220 euro before taxes and subsidies.

The Nokia 5220 XpressMusic may not be as smart as 5320 but it offers unconventional asymmetrical bar-shaped design and a clean-cut slim body with a total thickness of only 10.5mm.

The Nokia 5220 XpressMusic of course hosts a number of music features such as dedicated music keys, light effects that pulse with the music rhythm, stereo FM radio with RDS, stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), a 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD memory card slot for storing your music on cards with up to 2GB of capacity (a 512MB card included). The manufacturer also promises the whopping 24 hours of continuous playback time with a single charge.

Other features of the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic include a 2 megapixel snapper, a 2-inch QVGA 262K color TFT display, and a microUSB port. With the Nokia 5220 will come with an organic wallpaper that changes actively throughout the day, Opera Mini web browser, Yahoo! Go and Yahoo! Ready and support for Macromedia Adobe Flash (think YouTube!).

The Nokia 5220 XpressMusic will be available in Q3 2008 for around 160 euro before subsidies and taxes.
