I agree..To see if a manufacturer intended a phone to be focused on music, just look at the hardware of the phone..dedicated music controls means that the phone is made for music..think the N91, N81 and N96..camera shutter(and perhaps xenon flash) means that the phone is meant for imaging like the N73 and N82..Large screen and stereo speakers shouts video playback..QWERTY keypad is meant for business..Nokia is trying to get this message across to us, the consumers, in the simplest manner, thru the design of their phones

The N96 sound will be good in videos and tv because thats what the N96 is made for, its a very niche product.
Take it like a man, the N81 and N91 have the same sound quality GET OVER IT. Yes the N91 brought a lot of new things BUT look at how much of that actualy worked properly? N91 WAS the music flagship mainly because it was ONLY focused on music and NOKIA swore never to make a phone like that again thats why the N81 is a mixture with an emphasis to Ngage Gaming, Music and Video as well as being a great smartphone for Multitasking. The N81 is basicaly the current Music/Ngage Flagship until the N96 arrives if its that great. Are you aware of the fact that N96 has a 264mhz CPU taken from the N92?

I have to disagree with you here.
Firmware updates DO add additional features.
Let's take the case of the iPhone.
After numerous firmware updates, it can finally run Flash, TV-Out, send SMS to multiple contacts, etc.
So it is not impossible that N81 will have TV-Out or Demand Paging soon.

Louder doesn't mean better. N91 has louder and at the same time better audio quality than N81. N96 will have softer volume but same, if not better, audio quality with N91. N96's positioning is not like that of N95 which is an awesome all-in-one device but has weak points when it comes to audio quality. N96 is a totally different story. How much will 16Gb or 32Gb card cost? Another mid-range phone? I'll never spend extra money for expensive memory cards, which I did! Built-in 8Gb is ideal for me. N81 is a mid-range phone. N91 is high-end phone. No point in comparing them since they belong to different genres as you can call it. Let's just say that when N91 was first announced, it brought so many firsts which "awe" the public, that's why it's called a flagship music phone. On the otherhand, N81's announcement, didn't bring much excitement to the public. I think that's what distinguishes a flagship high-end phone from just a mid-tier handset.

Il have to disagree with that 8GB built-in is necessary. I prefer expandable, soon 8GB will not be enough then what? With my N81 MicroSD version il be able to upgrade to a 12GB OR 16GB MicroSD card =) it realy depends on the user and wether or not they will need more.
The N91 is on top ONLY because of it being louder than the N81 otherwise Sound Quality is the same. The N96 will also not be loud also because of the EU Volume Reduction Law so don't get too excited.
FW Updates do add certain software features like the delayd V20 N81 FW that will add FlashLite3.0 and let the Navi-wheel work in more menus, there are some Beta V20 N81s with this FW thats how i know.

N81 will never get any better. If you're after the best mobile phone then you should've bought the N95 8Gb in the first place and not N81/8Gb. Firmware updates will only enhance its performance and correct some bugs but will not add any feature whatsoever.
8Gb is necessary nowadays. With so many media files that you can put on and view on your device, say music alone, 8Gb is not even enough. For me, I'd choose a phone that has a built-in 8Gb memory than the one that has microSD slot because I never want to buy memory cards anymore. Large in-built memory is a must. A big NO to N78. Design is so cheap and redundant. I love N81 8Gb's design but I hate everything that follows it after! Looking for the best audio quality in a phone? We all know N91 still has the best and N81 is second best. N78 turns out not to be on par with N81. N96 will be the new king of sound when it hits the shelves. It will have almost all the features of all the Nseries phones, including the audio quality of N91, it's even better.

So after a proper sound test turns out the N81 is better than the N78. NOKIA must have messed around with the sound softer on purpose.

With moderate use this baby can last you just over 2days of life. With heavy use it will last around 17-20hours depending on what you're doing.

Jon2, 10 Jun 2008Yes, it's a pity that Nokia let this phone go to waste. It ... moreYep, or more like they focus a lot more on the phones that sell more units: N70,N73, and N95 have sold well over 8million units EACH (USA NOT included), N95-8GB, N73-ME, and N82 as well have sold VERY WELL for NOKIA and have all had a lot of FW updates, whilest niche and very specificaly aimed NOKIAs like N77, N81, N81-8gb, N92, N93, and N93i are all left with a few updates and then exit the market quietly. Interestingly enough though Gaming/Computer magazines like NAG, T3 etc. . . All use the N81 to do Java and Symbian Games testing i would assume that NOKIA would be aware of this and try updating the N81 more often with HELPFUL updates.

They didn't change any features clearly because this is just a way for them to make more money off of something. The average person doesn't need 8G of memory, it really isn't worth buying this one over the standard N81.

Tsepz, 07 Jun 2008Lol, only NOKIA know, im getting my N78 next month so ive l... moreYes, it's a pity that Nokia let this phone go to waste. It has a lot of potential but they didn't bother to give it any upgrades.
As I see it, the problem with Nokia now is that they only focus on the N95s and their cameraphones.
Other models are now left to the waters, just like what happened to N93.
