Nubia Alpha coming April 8

Michail, 01 April 2019

The nubia Alpha is a unique device, it has all the capabilities of a smartphone but it’s supposed to be worn on your wrist. You can track your fitness progress, control your audio and notifications just like other smartwatches but what separates the Alpha is that it can also make calls, take pictures and do basically everything your phone can, autonomously. Today we learned that the smartphone (as nubia likes to call it) is scheduled for release on April 8 in China on all the major e-commerce platforms.

We got a chance to play around with the device at MWC and while it does have some cool ideas the performance and UI left us wanting. Another obvious concern with the smartphone is its sheer size, it's a massive kit to strap on your wrist. Still, the 4" OLED display and the Alpha might be a a viable option for those who enjoy having the largest array of features on their wrist.

Other specs include the Snapdragon Wear 2100, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The battery is 500 mAh and has a propitiatory pin connector for charging. The 5MP f/2.2 camera sensor lies on the front right side and next to it is a sensor module along with all the buttons. The device runs on a custom Android software, which seemed quite clunky in our hands on.

Pricing starts at €450 for the WiFi-only black version and goes up to €650 for the gold eSIM variant.

Only a time will tell if this is hop or drop

The idea is good. Starting product is good. But the impementation needs to be better. Better hardware is needed. I wouldn't expect flagship stuff, but try to fit in at least 720p screen, Snapdragon 425 and good camera hardware inside it...
