OnePlus Open review

GSMArena Team, 19 October 2023.

Two great OLEDs, one is foldable

The OnePlus Open has two excellent screens with LTPO3 OLED panels - a 7.82-inch foldable primary and a 6.31-inch cover auxiliary. The two are not only full-fledged displays but also offer similar premium features such as 10-bit color depth, dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, 1440Hz PWM dimming and 240Hz touch response.

Oneplus Open review

Both screens have a maximum brightness of 1,400 nits and a peak brightness of 2,800 nits. They both support HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Natural Tone adjustments depending on the ambient light are available on both, too.

Oneplus Open review

The foldable screen has a resolution of 2,440 x 2,268 pixels or 426ppi. Its aspect ratio is almost 1:1. This screen is advertised as the more dynamic one capable of going all the way down to 1Hz.

The cover display has an even higher pixel density - 431ppi and resolution of 2,484 x 1,116 pixels. Its minimum refresh rate is 10Hz according to the official specs.

We've completed our display tests, and the numbers are solid. We measured 595 nits of maximum manual and 1,238nits of maximum auto brightness. The cover display numbers are similar - 566nits for manual and 1,159nits for automatic brightness.

The minimum brightness for both screens was just 1.9 nit.

Color accuracy

The OnePlus Open supports sRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces and switches between those on app/content bass. Its display options offer three color modes - Natural, Pro and Vivid.

Color modes - Oneplus Open review Color modes - Oneplus Open review
Color modes

Natural is the default one with soft and mostly accurate colors, except for the slightly bluish whites and grays. The Pro on the other hand has perfect accuracy with a D65 white point. Finally, Vivid has a slightly cooler color temperature compared to the Natural one, but you can tune the white temperature via a dedicated slider.

Refresh rate

The OnePlus Open has three Refresh Rate modes - Auto, High, and Standard.

According to the description, the Automatic one switches automatically between different modes and can do up to 120Hz, but it also aims to improve balanced battery life. The High always aims for the maximum 120Hz refresh rate when possible, while the Standard one does the same, but only goes up to 60Hz for longer battery life.

According to OnePlus, the foldable screen can drop down to 1Hz for static picture, while the cover one - to 10Hz. Unfortunately, we couldn't test this as the integrated Android refresh rate indicator only showed 120Hz or 60Hz.

What we can confirm is that the refresh rate drops down to 60Hz for video playback and gaming.

We are not sure if this is an OxygenOS issue or just an issue with pre-release firmware.

Streaming and HDR

The OnePlus Open displays support HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision formats. Both are recognized by all popular streaming apps. And thanks to the Widevine L1 support, they all stream high-resolution Dolby Vision content hassle-free.

Visual enhancements

The Display options menu offers three visual enhancements - Image Sharpener, Video Color Boost and Bright HDR Video Mode.

Image Sharpener enhances the clarity of low-quality photos and videos. It uses more battery, naturally, and we are not sure when it really activates, probably across compatible installed apps, but we didn't have any.

Video Color Boost tries to widen the color gamut in SDR content and increases battery consumption. It is available in a limited selection of apps, and, once again, we had no such apps.

Battery life

The OnePlus Open is powered by a 4,805mAh battery. That's essentially the average for the class, with a few models hovering around the 4,800mAh mark, some at 5,000mAh, and the Galaxy Z Fold5 having the smallest capacity, at 4,400mAh.

Both the Open and the Galaxy posted the same overall Active Use Score, but did so with some differences in the individual tests. The Open lasted longer in our web browsing test - quite significantly so, while the Galaxy did better in gaming and voice calls.

Expand to reveal our legacy battery test (Endurance rating). How we test now.

We have completed our battery life tests on both screens, and the results are great. The Open offered over 15 hours on its large foldable screen in both web and video scenarios.

When closed, the Open clocked over 18 hours of web browsing and video playback on its cover display.

The call time is also impressive at over 29 hours.

So, with an average standby of 250 hours, the OnePlus Open scored a total endurance rating of 96 hours for its large foldable screen and 105 hours for its cover display.

Oneplus Open review Oneplus Open review

Our battery tests were automated thanks to SmartViser, using its viSerDevice app. The endurance rating denotes how long the battery charge will last you if you use the device for an hour of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily. More details can be found here.

Video test carried out in 60Hz refresh rate mode. Web browsing test done at the display's highest refresh rate whenever possible. Refer to the respective reviews for specifics. To adjust the endurance rating formula to match your own usage patterns check out our all-time battery test results chart where you can also find all phones we've tested.

Charging speed

The OnePlus Open supports up to 67W fast wired charging, and it will ship in most markets with a 67W Super VOOC charger. There are other markets, like India, where the phone ships with a more powerful 80W SuperVOOC charger even if the phone doesn't support 80W. We received the retail box intended for India, which includes an 80W SuperVOOC charger, though, as we mentioned - the phone maxes out at 67W charging.

Oneplus Open review

According to the official press materials, the OnePlus Open should go from 1% to 100% in 42 minutes with the supplied charger.

It recharged 45% of the Open's battery in 15 minutes, while another 15 minutes will get you to 80%. And 42mins is exactly the time it took for the Open to go from 1% to 100% in our test with the 80W adapter.

The battery options include features like Power Saving mode, Improved Standby (puts some apps to sleep automatically), and Optimized Charging.

Optimized Charging allows the Open to adapt its charging curves to your charging patterns (mostly related to overnight charging and your sleep routine), so it minimizes the time the battery spends at 100%. It will charge quickly up to 80% and will then only finish things off just before it thinks you're going to need the phone.

The Optimized Charging can be off, all day on, or enabled just for overnight charging.

There is no wireless charging on the OnePlus Open.

Speakers

The OnePlus Open features a Dolby Atmos system with three speakers and support for spatial sound. Two of the speakers are placed at the top, and the third one is at the bottom. The second speaker on the top is actually the earpiece and is weaker compared to the other (symmetrical) two, but it helps for the Atmos and spatial effects.

Speakers - Oneplus Open review Speakers - Oneplus Open review
Speakers

OnePlus has assigned speaker roles for when they are playing in portrait orientation - the top left speaker serves as a left channel, while the top right and bottom right one play the right channel. If you rotate the phone at 180 degrees, the logic will remain the same.

In landscape orientation, the output is adjusted to match the orientation of the speakers. In any case, each speaker will still output some of the 'opposite' channel, but at a much lower volume.

The OnePlus Open scored an Average loudness mark. Its audio quality is very good with some bass, great vocals, and well-presented high frequencies.

Use the Playback controls to listen to the phone sample recordings (best use headphones). We measure the average loudness of the speakers in LUFS. A lower absolute value means a louder sound. A look at the frequency response chart will tell you how far off the ideal "0db" flat line is the reproduction of the bass, treble, and mid frequencies. You can add more phones to compare how they differ. The scores and ratings are not comparable with our older loudspeaker test. Learn more about how we test here.
