OnePlus Pad 2 review
Camera
The OnePlus Pad 2 has a 13MP rear camera with autofocus and an 8MP front camera with a fixed focus. The back one supports 4K video capturing, while the front one can do 1080p videos and 1080p video calls. Optional electronic stabilization is available on both sides for the 1080p@30fps mode.
The camera app is pretty straightforward. Night Mode is supported for the rear camera, including Tripod Night Mode.
The photos from the rear camera are average - the noise is minimal, and they offer a wide dynamic range and likable and lively colors, but the resolved detail is mediocre at best.
The photos from the front camera are alright - the detail here seems enough, the colors are a bit over-saturated but not over the top, and the subject is always well exposed, while the dynamic range remains adequately wide.
The 4K video from the rear camera offers stereo sound and the footage has lively colors, low noise, high contrast. The detail is once again mediocre and the dynamic range is average.
The 1080p video from the front camera is incredibly soft and with low dynamic range. Indoors, it looks somewhat desaturated, too. It will do for video calls, but they won't excel in video quality.
Our verdict
The OnePlus Pad 2 is an excellent mid-range tablet, one that offers flagship-grade performance, speakers and battery life. We were impressed across the board with its build and overall experience. The optional accessories are a nice touch, too.
We think it is among the best tablets you can get for €500, especially if you get it with a bunch of freebies from the OnePlus website.
It is not the perfect tablet, of course. It does not offer good cameras, there is no biometric security, no cellular version, and no desktop-oriented features similar to DeX or Ready For. Plus, the Smart Keyboard does need further software improvements.
But for a heavy-duty multimedia machine with a stylus - it is perfect. That is why we encourage you to consider it an option. Before deciding, though, do check out the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro as well - it is a similarly priced tablet with a better screen, cameras and larger battery, but with a previous generation chipset.
Pros
- Aluminum unibody.
- Bright HDR screen, 144Hz refresh rate.
- Great battery life, fast to charger.
- Very loud speakers.
- Flagship-grade performance, good stability.
- Clean and fast OxygenOS.
- Optional stylus and keyboard with touchpad available.
Cons
- Low screen contrast ratio.
- No fingerprint scanner.
- Poor camera quality.
- No desktop UI.
- Charger is bundled only when purchasing direct from OnePlus.
- The Smart Keyboard could be better at switching between languages and trackpad click action is hit-and-miss.
