Oppo Find X fails bend test

The Oppo Find X with its innovative motorized top section that houses the cameras took the world by storm since it was announced, but there have been concerns about the durability of at least the sliding mechanism itself, if not the entire phone.

These concerns are definitely not going to be put to rest by the video below, in which Zack from JerryRigEverything performs his usual battery of tests on the Find X.

The motorized top section, when out, does wiggle a bit, moving all over. This means there's space for dust and other particles to be caught down inside the moving parts.

In the screen scratch test, the Find X gets marks at a level 6 on the Mohs scale, with deeper grooves showing up at level 7. That's standard for a device employing Gorilla Glass 5.

In the burn test the AMOLED panel lasts for 14 seconds before the pixels start dying. While LCDs usually recover from burns, AMOLEDs don't, so keep that in mind if you ever want to recreate such testing on your device.

The Oppo Find X bend test yields a big fail. It bent way too far compared to other handsets, and never stopped bending like most phones do. The metal frame can handle the flexing, but the display panel doesn't, and it cracks. In the end, both the front and rear glass broke.

The pressure the Find X was subjected to during the bend test is similar to what other smartphones have been put through, but over 90% of them have so far been able to withstand such abuse.

Hence, if you do get a Find X make sure to never accidentally sit on it, step on it, or any other such thing. It requires more care than competing flagships, but you may decide that the uniqueness of its motorized mechanism and notchless touchscreen are worth the tradeoff.
