Qualcomm held its 5G Summit conference in Barcelona recently where the chipmaker confirmed it will be partnering with Oppo to deliver a dual-mode 5G phone. Oppo’s Henry Tang elaborated that his company is ready to take the next leap in 5G deployment and will introduce the Qualcomm powered dual-mode 5G phone on the market before the end of 2019.

Dual-mode 5G means the phone supports both SA (Standalone mode) and NSA (non-standalone) network modes. The SA mode uses 5G cells for both signaling and data transfer without the need of the existing LTE network. The NSA mode on the other hand relies on LTE bands for tasks like communication between cell towers and servers and will be tasked with speeding up 5G deployment thanks to the lowered costs.

We hope our next-generation dual-mode 5G offerings will deliver a superior experience to more consumers in more markets globally, making 5G readily available to a wider consumer base worldwide. - Henry Tang

We still don’t have any official details for the upcoming dual-mode 5G device from Oppo. According to speculation, the device will be powered by the upcoming Qualcomm 7250 SoC which will be the first midrange 5G chipset in the chipmaker’s lineup. Given that the end of the year is slowly creeping up we should get more info soon.
