Our video review of Nothing's CMF Phone 1 is now out

Vlad, 10 July 2024

A couple of days ago, Nothing sub-brand CMF introduced its first ever smartphone, the CMF Phone 1, and this is Nothing's cheapest handset yet. What it lacks in specifications it definitely makes up for in design prowess and customizability.

Unlike every other mainstream device, you can replace its back covers, with Nothing offering a few options already but also letting you 3D print your own, if you're so inclined. You can add other accessories too like a lanyard or card holder, and in theory the sky's the limit.

It's definitely an intriguing take on the barebones smartphone, this, with the unique design and the customizability undoubtedly trying to distract you from the specs - which aren't bad, mind you, but the lack of NFC in 2024 is very hard to excuse. That's a $1-5 cost saving that we're sure a lot of people would have gladly paid on top of the phone's current price to be able to use mobile payments.

In less than seven minutes, you'll find out all about the most important aspects of this device: the design (of course), the build quality, the current accessories offered by CMF, the display and speaker quality, the fingerprint scanner, storage, software, performance, battery life, charging, and camera quality.

Especially given that Indians use UPI, and nothing else. The lack of NFC (even in flagships) wouldn't bother them anyways.

Typical Indian marketing tactic of removing NFC on every smartphone. Expect the European variant to at least include NFC, at least when it gets released.
