Pixel Buds A-Series hands-on
Google just launched its Pixel Buds A-Series, a more economical version of the Pixel Buds that launched with the Pixel 5 in 2020. The result is a very similar product down to the weight, size, fit, sound, and hardware, but with a couple of key differences and a much lower $99 price point.
What exactly do you lose out on if you want to save $80? Simply put, the Buds A-Series don’t have wireless charging, and it does not have the experimental ‘Attention Alerts’ features. Everything else is the same on paper and all of the features are still here.
Pixel Bud (2020) on left, Pixel Bud A-Series on rightYou still get touch controls on each Bud, and you are still able to use either Bud by itself if you want. Hands-Free “Hey Google” commands work the same, and in-ear detection is present as well. Let’s see what’s in the box.
The Pixel Buds A-Series includes three ear-tip sizes, a USB-A to USB-C charging cable, and a quick start guide. On a more detailed note, the packaging is constructed with a flip-up lid that looks to cut some of the production cost.
These Buds look and feel identical to the 2020 Pixel Buds. With the buds inside, the case weighs in at 53g, making for an 8-gram reduction of weight without the wireless charging coil. Each Bud weighs just 5 grams.
The A-Series case is a couple of millimeters shorter in length, as well. The Buds and their fit is otherwise identical to the Pixel Buds (2020). Instead of two LED indicators like on the Pixel Buds, the A-Series has only one LED that changes from white to amber when the battery life of the Buds are low.
The Pixel Buds A-Series now makes Google’s offering more affordable than Apple’s entry-level AirPods, which start at MSRP $159. What do you think of the new Pixel Buds A-Series? Are you guys down for us to review them?
