Qualcomm, Telstra demo 1Gbps LTE in Australia with the X16 modem

Peter, 07 February 2017

The Land Down Under is getting some impressive LTE speeds - Telstra demonstrated its new gigabit network which achieved 930Mbps downlink and 127Mbps uplink speeds in a test. The test was done over a Netgear Nighthawk M1 mobile router.

That router is the first to be powered by Qualcomm’s X16 LTE modem. Why you should care? The Snapdragon 835 chipset has that exact same modem. No phones have it yet, but it won't be long now.

Anyway, that single mobile router managed to power five Pixel XL phones in a Daydream VR headset, each streaming 360° 4K video. Simultaneously! And this was live video too, streamed from the Sydney Opera House over another Nighthawk modem to Telstra’s gigabit network.

In another demo, a 32 minute HD video from YouTube Red finished downloading in 15 seconds. Equally impressive was the 300MB upload to Google Photos done in 30 seconds. A race against an older Cat. 6 modem showed Google Drive loading much faster - the gigabit modem had loaded its eighth file by the time the Cat. 6 modem completed its first one.
