Samsung Galaxy S5 review: Fab Five

08 April 2014
Every time the Samsung Galaxy S counter flips a digit, the world is getting ready to be amazed. The lineup that stood up to the iPhone and has been pulling Android to the very top of the food chain, is under new leadership effective last month...

AnonD-237024, 08 Apr 2014The plastic build NEEDS to change, and I'm sure some will a... moreThe S5's plastic build is excellent if not aesthetically pleasing. The phone doesn't creak, the buttons don't rattle, the waistline is thin, and the weight still has a solid heft while being evenly balanced. Compared to metal, plastic is lighter, better for reception, and less cost prohibitive which hopefully translates to savings for the consumer in the long run. Add to that a removable battery which is always an advantage AND hardware navigation keys. Then there's the 1080p Super Amoled wich is brighter and more accurate than the S4 (the S4 Active has an lcd screen btw, not amoled). Seriously, the S5 is not a hideous phone, and the point is moot with a case on. It looks very grown up and doesn't sacrifice usability (i.e. using a metal unibody as an excuse for no removable battery) in the name of shallow superficiality. As for that flap for the USB port, why shouldn't it be on a flagship? It has an important function, but because it doesn't look pretty it should be omitted? I can't tell if you're playing devil's advocate or a hipster that hates anything mainstream because the negatives you're pointing out are inconsequential or terribly generalized. The S5 camera takes blurry photos because of no OIS? But yet GSMARENA declares it superior to the G2's. I'd much much rather have OIS instead of a heart rate monitor though, but not to the point I look at the S5 with such disdain and deem it beneath my consideration. The screen is too small and should be increased by a few FRACTIONS of an inch? Because a 5.1" screen isnt huge? You speak of a proper flagship, so you must recognize even a 4.8" screen is already pushing the limits of what's comfy for the majority of consumers. If you truly are being objective, then recognize the S5 for it's many strengths in addition to its weaknesses.

I took some videos on my S5 this morning at my daughter's school. All play fine except the longest of them, at 12 minutes. When I Play This Video I Get A Pop Up That Tells Me Play video data only. There is no sound to this video. I am so upset as to why not.

Anonymous, 29 May 2014Or you could use your brain for one second and realize that... moreOr maybe you have to nderstand that Samsung products suffeer from extremely bad quality and virtually there is no Galaxy S4 without problems. Also there is nothing new in S5 to replace S4 but only more problems. I have S3 new because of the 2 sim cards. I tried S4 and this was the cheapes piece of plastic I ever hold in my hands. Also if you try sony or LG products for a while you will never get back to Samsung't pathetic quality and terrible design.

I don't have the option to schedule text messages. I can delay them, but there is no option to turn on scheduled text messages. Where do I have to go to enable this?

I have one of these now through my work. My two cents (in brief) -
                        POSITIVES:
                        Good screen
                        Good quality image/video capture
                        Very good gaming performance
Quite a few new and useful UI features

                        NEGATIVES:
Lots of Samsung (and EE) bloatware
Clumsy, almost shambolic, implementation of the fingerprint scanner - needs two hands and hardly ever works first time.
                        Charging port cover very flimsy

I've not got the time to cover everything but those are my main points. Verdict - good but how on earth did the fingerprint scanner pass quality control or even the R&D phase?

Why not? We critise films, movie's etc... but we cant judge this one phone?

That is some of the most flawed logic I have ever read.

Within 5 weeks from buying the S5, the finger print scanner stopped functioning. I took it to Samsung Service centre in Singapore and they agreed to repair it and provide an older model of phone as temporary replacement till completion of repair. However, Samsung's proposal is very painful because I am supposed to have a "SIM card adaptor" and a different charger if I have to use the temporary phone !! I finally withdraw my complaint and feel it is not worth the hassle to repair the scanner feature.

What I conclude is that Samsung's after-sales services are third class as compared to the product's brand image and market positioning. Also it seems that although S5 has very many new features, many of the high-tech new features do not work properly or will stop working very soon ! It seems Samsung is not focusing on the quality of its devices but only on its brand marketing. This is a sure recipe for a brand to fall in value if it does not keep its product quality as good as its features.

So this was the review of snapdragon version, i'd like to see a comparison with international octa core exynos version if possible, especially on audio part since it has a wolfson chip.

Disappointed with GSM Arena for the first time. I think S5 is the best phone in the market. Better than Z2 and One. But then GSM,at least in my opinion, has done a not so good job with reviewing the screen of S5. I didn't find the screen to be that good. Agree, Samsung has worked on some aspects of the screen like brightness. But the colors still are not accurate. And also the screen still feels like a collection of small dots, unlike the non-AMOLED displays. This is more prominent with lighter colors. S5's screen still is amazing but certainly not as good as what GSM says. I usually don't comment on sites, unless I am very sure of what I am saying.

The Galaxy S5 is similar to the S4,but you can see the differences easily, the Screens alot Brighter an the Menu totally different to use, plus the batterylife as been improved alot, just wished the menu was alot easier to use like the S4,as you could add Advance Task Manager to your screen on the S4 an stop things running, but with the S5 you have to press the settings button an then search for the Advance Task Manager to stop things running which can be Annoying, just hope someone can create application so we can get to this alot Quicker on the S5,Just wish we had better Speakers from Samsung on there Smartphones,an instead of just one Speaker but two
