This has been going on for a while now but, as both makers are keener than ever to outdo each other in the race to the Android top, their flagships are only getting more and more alike. The biggest difference is now in the timing, which is also part of the game...

I don't really know if I shld trust the battery life tests to translate into real world usage: they rated S4 to be better than G2, but S4 has even worse battery life than my S3 out of the box. (As in w/o any disabling etc)

Anonymous, 24 May 2014I have just bought the LG G2 after thoroughly reading this ... moreThis is the same feeling i had when i have shifted from Note 3 to G2. I was shifted coz the note 3 was little big for me to handle. But i was totally amazed by G2, so fast and literally no lags at all. Amazing display with good camera .

look how much cheaper s4 is. Or how much G3 costs.
Plus things like the display and camera in galaxy are more expensive. So price is justified.
However if some is looking to spend less then yes g2 is a nice route. But so is s4 or m7. Or even something like nexus or OPPO.

Here in Finland you can get the lg g2 for just 349€ where as the S5 costs 639€. The price difference is huge and i really don't think that the S5 has enough going for it to justify the huge gap in the prices.

On displays: any comparison of ssinf flagship vs the competition will be one of OLED vs IPS LCD or vs *lower quality* OLED.

I may be slightly off, but AFAIK the LG flex is the only smartphone in existence that uses an OLED display of at least 720p (lg flex is 720p) THAT ISNT A SAMSUNG, or was not manufactured by Samsung and supplied to 3rd party.

To make a long story short, while Samsung is certainly not the only company in the OLED industry, they most certainly are the #1 manufacturer of high performance OLED and none of the competition even comes close.

Samsung has been putting OLED in their galaxy phones for 3-4 years, in 10s of millions of units per year quantities, while the competition either literally *cant do it* (eg sharp, in terms of smart phones, japan display, au optronics, etc) or cannot come near samsung's process success (volume, yield/cost, and quality).

LG spent a great deal of money buying Kodak's patent portfolio for the OLED patents filed in the early 1990s when organic electronics research was only just beginning to become popular.

That being said, they only just barely completed their fab for 720p displays, while Samsung has already hit and surpassed that mark years ago with... What was it? The S3 or S2? They still couldn't touch the output that Samsung achieves with 1080p right now.

Samsung's dominance is rooted in proprietary technology and trade secrets. This single technology is a major target of Chinese industrial espionage and also the reason that Samsung will not build an OLED fab outside of Korea
