Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Oppo Find 7a: Phantom menace

13 May 2014
So, a couple of weeks’ break and the Galaxy S5 is ready for the next round. And it’s only getting harder for the Samsung flagship - who would’ve thought we’d say this ahead of a head-to-head involving a Chinese smartphone?

Well i own Oppo Find 7a. One of the first to use the device in US.(Got bored after using Samsung for 3 yrs.) I can confirm that it has extremely loud and crisp dual speakers at the back. Samsung doesn't even come close.
The picture quality is really good as you can see here. The comparison doesnt mention an advantage of Find 7a, the super fast charging speed. That is the main reason i got this over any other established brand.
Audio, to me, is far better than i had before. It is loud, and using the equalizer u can put in a lot of punch to the output. I don't know what is stereo crosstalk, but i didn't get bothered by any defect in the headphone output.
Always 'on' voice command is also present. Not sure why this is not mentioned as an advantage. It was shown as a big deal for Moto X! Daydream is also present.
About the build, the body of the device is not plastic! The removable back cover and the housings at the back are. But its built on a Al-Mg alloy frame, and it extends to the edges of the device. It has a much more premium feel in hand than S5. (Though i doubt if Oppo can withstand a fall from 2 stories high. Plastic has its advantages.)
There are bugs in the Oppo software, but so does every other custom ROM. Oppo does push atleast 1 update OTA each month. They are working on a much more feature rich ColorOS2.0 and are going to push it in a few months. Sad that the new one is also based on android 4.3. I am actually surprised that it could keep up and beat S5 running kitkat on a faster variant processor.
Anyways, am happy with it. It didnt cost me a lot, so, if needed i can get another new device within 1 yr down the line. But i dont think this device will disappoint me so soon.

AnonD-261043, 14 May 2014"Both phones are fairly basic when it comes to on-boa(... moreIf you want to eradicate handshake there are three ways to achieve that

      1. optics with fast aperture
      2. with O.S.
      3. Combination of two

Samsung has neither , its ISOCELL does improve upon low light details compared to S4 but does not increase shutter speed in low light so will still lead to shakes .I had S4 Changed it after 5 days for one simple reason that it was too slow to capture photos of animals , they all came blurred due to slow shutter speed while Htc One M7 which has aperture of 2.0 and O.I.S. was beneficial in both situations i.e. to freeze fast movements like pets etc as well as longer shutter speed without shakes due to OIS. GOD only knows why they removed it in M8. You can also looks in Nokia 808 purview simply best camera phone and sells for less then any decent pocket camera

Anonymous, 14 May 2014Correct, but the colour saturation levels are more noticeab... moreThanks. I agree completely , most flagship phones nowadays except iPhones are offering saturation, color temp etc adjustment and i tried it in lumias and Samsungs but to be honest it was not practical to keep on changing preferences from lets say while shifting from photo app to movies or to web pages so after two three days i left them at default. Htc one M7 to me was simply the best compromise between color accuracy & Saturation , contrast while iPhone 5s most accurate but it lacks WOW factor of Htc One M7 screen

Anonymous, 14 May 2014The S5 is color accurate for Amoled. And no phone screen is... morewell its true that no screen is 100% accurate in a phone but at the same time some are closer to perfection then others.

What i have seen and it does not even require trained eyes is that samsung Phones ( mentioned before ) had issues in showing shades of Pink & orange i.e. often it will look like red which was alarming. Also for a heavy web user as myself whites in webpages even at ill brightness were either bluish or muddy white which led to poor contrast and eye strain. If you open Gsmarena on Lets say Samsung S4/S5 and compare it with Htc one M7, any iPhone , Nokia Lumia 920 you will see it for yourself.
At the same time Since it has Superb Contrast , quite some times screen will give excellent DOF effect which is WOW.
Well to each its own but my point is simply its color accuracy is bad.

Anonymous, 14 May 2014The S5 is color accurate for Amoled. And no phone screen is... moreCorrect, but the colour saturation levels are more noticeable in the Galaxy S5. Sure you can change it, but you can change any displays output.

His point is still valid, as it is his preference.

The S5 will win every comparison this year, without doubt. Totally at odds with evey other review site.

"Both phones are fairly basic when it comes to on-boa(r)d speakers - a single speaker on the back"

I thought the Oppo has two speakers?

Nevertheless a fine review. Thanks! I believe if the Find 7 won't do any better than the 7a (concercing AC3 support, stereo crosstalk, video/audio compression) then it will do even worse in comparison, because the price difference isn't that much any more.
The 7a might be compatible to the battery of the 7, so one can close the gap to the S5 concerning battery life.

For the future: Is there a possibility to include more "handshaking" reviews for the camera tests? Actually I don't use a tripod and in day-to-day use a inferior camera with a better stabilization might give a better end result than a otherwise superior camera with a bad stabilization.

                @the anonymous writers
Thanks for clarification. I thought the additional contacts on the battery will lessen the strain on the battery, when quick charchged.

How did it win if it "technically" loses.
The S5 has a few bits and pieces more advanced.
That's just how it is. It does not make it perfect. It does not mean you have to like it or want.
If you like Oppo better than it's better for you even if the S5 can do a few things better.
But why get bent out of shape and in denial about it?

I'd take the S5, because I listen to music a lot. Quality audio output and a SD card slot over a bit bigger screen. Even though Samsung has annoying UI, it can be changed and replaced by installing CyanogenMod.

the review is quite detailed specially the photography related matter but it also highlights certain shall i say confusing pieces in the review like

S5 has the most color accurate Screen or generally putting SAMOLED better than IPS LCD.

I am an amateur photographer as well has sold photographic equipments for a long time and is a product designer by profession.

A some one who deals with colors, color accuracy on daily basis as well as who has a a taste for superb screens i beg to differ
i have used/tried Samsung note 2, s4, s5 & note 3 neo and they all have problem of poor color accuracy & highly over saturated colors . I know many people love this sort of palette but that does not make it accurate as well

.. super camera packages and the sharpest video quality provide lots of fun 2

...am actually very impressed by the Oppo7a just reading the reviews.

However, IMHO, the price argument will only create sustainable market share, if the specs are en par with the competition (or better) at a competitive price.

...or the Chinese create more ring tones like 'HELLO YA' to be found on the Huawei G510. (Added this phone to the collection just for this ring tone)
