Samsung Galaxy Alpha preview: First look

13 August 2014
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a surprising change in the Samsung product strategy. It certainly has many of the Galaxy S5 key selling features, while staking on more premium material such as aluminum. But it’s not another flagship, no, it’s rather an offshoot of the Galaxy family tree – something that the Galaxy S5 mini could have been but is not. An unusual bird, indeed.

Looks like once again TSMC will not be able to deliver (enough) A8 chips as their 20nm process is facing issues, so Apple might have to return to Samsung again.

Samsung use Galaxy Alpha to test ability of Iphone 6 as the first weapon then build a new flagship (May be Galaxy S6) as the second weapon on the market.

                Very good strategy!

Galaxy Alpha is small knife but small knife can also kill if use in the right place.

Unexpandable memory? You guys must be following Iphone and Nokia? Isn't it? A few Smart things that are needed for a smart phone is Speed, memory and a large capacity battery. Chinese phones rule with all these. For Samsung and Apple, changing the bezel and design is all they have got in their every new phone. Nothing really technically.

Not to mention screen and radio (GPS, WiFi, 3G) still uses as much.

I can't deny that I really like this phone. First I would wait for a battery test but if it is decent I would consider this over the z1 compact. Z3 compact is on the other hand arriving soon and my guess is that it will be much better. Always happy to see more high end offerings in the mid size screen bracket.

Exynos 5430 is the first 20nm ARM CPU in the world, and should be more efficient that any of the other ARM CPU in power consumption

It also has HEVC hardware decoder. Snapdragon 801 doesn't have this (but snap 805 has it though)

Anonymous, 14 Aug 2014The size of the screen HAS to have an impact on the battery... moreI didn't say that screen size (or rather pixel size) will not have any impact at all.
What I actually meant was, screen resolution has more effect on power consumption than screen size.
5.1 inch to 4.7 inch is only a small reduction whereas over 2 million pixels on S5 vs just less than a million pixels on Alpha is more than 50% reduction in the number of LED's to power, which is actually more significant than the reduction in size.
