GSMArena smartphone buyer's guide: February 2015

09 February 2015
Each year there's slump in sales of mobile devices in the January/February. That's because all the holiday gifts have been bought and the MWC – and all next-generation phones it brings – is just around the corner. This doesn’t mean it's a bad time to buy...

From 2010, I always go to this site for ''advice'' and current events gadget wise. My one x+ 64gb. (c.dec.2012) still works fine. This year would hopefully be an upgrade and have been browsing heavily on my trusted sites including this one.
Thank you very much indeed for the reviews and news coverage.
Best regards to a friend of mine Tareq who recommended this site.

I noticed the LG G3 is in the $300-$400 category... My question is, where can I get that to buy for that price? Everywhere I look I see prices North of $400..

Just my personal taste, but out of these devices I would recommend:

sub-€100: Moto E (Does all the basics and comes with android L and the 1GB RAM gives it decent futureproofing)

€100-€200: Desire 816G (13MP camera, decent performance, huge screen, sense 6 plus rumoured android l upgrade)

€200-€300: Xperia Z1 (late 2013 that's aged crazy well, 20MP camera is crazy good, upcoming android l upgrade)

€300-€400: LG G3 (Compact for a phablet, Quad HD screen sharper than my computer monitor, android l update available)

€400+: Galaxy Note 4 Exynos (Not usually a fan of Samsung phones, but the Note series has always been great. Good camera and accessory support, excellent S Pen support)

For a start, I dont think any Android mobile with 1 GB of RAM or less can ever be recommended. They are compromised from the beginning. The second issue for Android is any mobile that seeks to show size over substance, ie a larger screen with poor underpinnings should be avoided. They are rubbish bin material and often poorly made. WP devices are getter better. In the low to mid range they offer better value than Android. I dont know why the Samsung S5 was not included. In Australia it was in the better reception category with the highly regarded consumer Choice magazine (together with Apple) and showed Samsung finally got their antenna systems working. LTE is the way to go. Never pay top dollar is for a 3G mobile. Waste of monies. Blackberry is gaining market share again in some countries and their OS is certainly the best, as is their security which is a must today. Overall we need better mobiles in the market, not cheap compromised units, or way over the top so called high end units, and far better software. Apple is just plain expensive. So WP and new Blackberry devices are the ones that have the opportunity to capture the low to middle volume market.

I've been using Sony devices for years and never had any problems. I know of one person who's experienced the self cracking problem with his Z. Somehow I think it's a sim free unlocked phone problem. The batches Sony sends to the networks seem to be the best which pass quality control.
