Sony Xperia Z3+ review: The pre-sequel

08 June 2015
The Sony Xperia Z3+ is the Japanese flagship we’ve all been anticipating, but is it really the one we’ve been hoping for? Or are the predictable chipset update and minor design touches simply a prelude to a proper upgrade later this year?

S6 Edge is a better choice.
If you are tight on a budget and want a more sane solution, I recommend you take Z3 - its price will go down when z3+ becomes available worldwide, while offering pretty much the same specs (even better in fact- better battery life and more stable processor).

Hi GSMA. You need to update this text on page 5 : "That's not surprising either, but the dip in performance meant that in Antutu, for example, the numbers plummeted from a 55K first run to as low as 46K as the runs ramped up." If the final model scores 49k on it's first run, then by how much does the score drop as the SOC heats up with consecutive runs?

All I have to say is Sony is the best, using my Sony Z Ultra with the 28nm s800 chip, that never overheated so why would a 20 nm chip overheat.

Anonymous, 02 Jul 2015This is the retail unit, do you actually think Sony can mak... moreZ3+ has water resistance over the S6 and the G4.
It has stereo speakers (but with the sound coming from mobile speakers, it makes little difference).
It's also easier to fit in to your pockets, no bulging camera. And not a curved design.

But yes, buying the z3 without the plus, for a good price now that the plus is launched, makes more sense. And then the Z3 can be found cheaper than S6 and G4, and then it makes sense.

AnonD-402280, 02 Jul 2015Ladies and gentlemen, Sony will never sabotage their $$$$ c... moreThe issue with the camera falling behind competition probably has nothing to do with not wanting to compete with their digital camera segment.

I think Sony simply made a misstake when they released the first phone with the 20.7MP module.
The module simply packs the pixels too tight.
Sony wanted in, in the resolution race. Most people never heard about Nokia 808 or 1020, or had forgotten about them.
So 20.7 Megapixels still sounded a lot to people.
Then Sony felt they could not go back in resolution.

Other has chosen to use their sensors with lower resolution. And those sensor might very well be better when it comes to quality.
And the very good sensor used in Note 4 and S6, is most likely to thick to fit inside a Z-series case, unless they added a bulge for the camera, and they didnt want to do that.

troyxx, 02 Jul 2015The same problems still persist since the Z!!!! Poor loud s... moreThe loudspeakers arent poor when compared to the sound from most other speakers on mobiles.
But it you are talking ring volumes. Well, yes, that is an issue. But very likely it's due to the waterproofing.

The soundlevels when used with headphones are ok, for most users. It's mostly when you connect higher quality headphones that it might be an issue. Although some of us out there wants to do this, most users dont, so like most others sony uses cheaper, smaller components. Besides, sony still wants to keep a market for dedicated "hifi" portable music players.

No the LED isnt that strong.
But not many other have stronger ones. Some have dual LEDs that are better for color balance, however.

AnonD-51393, 08 Jun 2015I dont mind FullHD instead of QHD, but the grid of dots is ... moreI have a Z3 that I havent used much, and a xperia active that i have used a lot. Both have wet finger tracking (not that it works very well), so they have that grid of dots.
I dont know if it's worse on the Z3+ than on the active (but the active feels worse than the z3).
Mostly you wont see them when you look straight at the device. In bright sunshine, and perhaps more when hitting the display at certain angles, you might see the dots.
Or when you look at the device from an angle.
                It's not very annoying.
Finger grease on you screen will most likely be more annoying than those dots.

And they rarely mention how good a set actually sounds. The Z3 for instance in normal pop like music was not far behind the M8 in volume, but somewhat in bass. When it can to other things, especially those that required quality and detail it could actually get louder and was much clearer. Or the S6 even after retesting Gsm claims that the S5 is louder and doesn't mention that the S6 sounds better. When clearly the S6 is noticably louder and better sounding.

Isnt it embarrassing that the Z3+ has much worst battery compared to the Z3 aswell as the S6 with much smaller battery and QHD screen?

Ladies and gentlemen, Sony will never sabotage their $$$$ camera business. It's all about business strategy. They will never make a smartphone camera better than their cameras. Get with reality, go out and check out the phone instead of just relying on review sites.
