Samsung Galaxy S7 edge hands-on: Camera test

24 February, 2016
We had the opportunity to spend the day with the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and we set out on a photo tour of Barcelona, MWC's home city in the last ten or so years.

To the writer of the article:

While on selfie mode or video calls did you notice the wide angle lens distorting the body or face or everything off centre like the S6/S6edge does? Thanks

Selfies or video calls on the S6/S6 edge are very unflattering because the face/body gets distorted. Wondering if the same happens with the S7.

I really hate that 4:3 aspect ratio, I'm so confused about the cam on this phone,
    you have gr8 sensor , gr8 f/1.7 aperture , gr8 Dual focusing and thus gr8 low-light performance
but on the other hand: only 12/5 mp cams, and unpleasing 4:3 aspect ratio

AnonD-411799, 25 Feb 2016whats the haaaaaaaaaaaaard measurement for s7 and xperia x?... moreYou're at a site that has a specific purpose of telling you such information. To your very surprise, you will find that Xperias have the lowest screen to body ratio and Samsung has rather high ratio. In comparison to the competition the difference is high. On a scale of 10, Sony is at 0 (worst ratio) and Samsung is around 8 (rather good ratio).

Even in the highest end of professional digital cameras, you wont be able to capture the full resolution of the sensor.
So sure, the settings in the s6 edge+ may be 12 megapixels. But the S7, should capture more details, thus giving people a higher captured resolution, despite, both saying 12 megapixels.

"large pixels (1.4µ)" Since when has 1.4µ been considered large?
In the contraints of physics and with an excellent combination of hardware and software, the pictures from the S7 do look very good and comparable with the best there is today. I'd still rather have my 808 to take pictures with.

Not relevant to the camera but I don't like the white version. Nothing compares to the silver version of the phone imo. The way it shines is just amazing. If I was Samsung I would have a pic of the phone near a pool or beach with the sun shining shining and water on it.

I thought only "lol this phone is the best thing evaaaaahhhh" and "shut up you fanboy lol it sucks" are premitted on this website. Just kidding. But seriously, thanks for this breath of fresh air.

As for the camera - the flaws are apparent: there is quite a bit of over-processing going on and high-ISO shots are unsurprisingly noisy. However, taking into consideration the fact that this is a phone camera and not a dedicated system - it's quite amazing. Probably the best one I've seen, actually. The focusing seems fast, the low-light performance is acceptable (like, the first time ever for a phone cam) and the colors are nice. This is probably the first phone i'd actually use for an everyday photography, when my DSLR isn't with me.

The ISO 1250 shot (jpg no 40 inside, no flash 1/10s) is the most revealing for me.

At 1:1 pixel-peeping level there is lots of noise (both chrome and luminance), loss of detail is pronounced.

However, it is still amongst the best I have ever seen from a mobile phone with a sensor of this size (1" sensor were better, naturally, you can't beat physics).

When downsampled by 4x (0.5x resolution in both vertical and horizonal, so making each 4 pixels into 1 new pixel) and the resolution is decent at the new downsampled 1:1 level and the noise is much better behaved.

I'd say that the camera for low-light looks very promising indeed, but mainly for online low-res (1000x800 pixels) images. Higher than that and a 1" compact cam still whoops S7 Edges bottom, no surpise there.

Just wish that Samsung would ship 64GB and 128GB internal memory (as the SC CARD slot cannot be used as Flex storage, for apps/data), as 32GB in 2016 just doesn't cut it. Xiaomi, Apple, Huawei, Asus... they are all offering 128GB internal flash models, Huawei and Asus even with additional sd card slots!

I just saw a screenshot of the S6 Edge Plus camera res options, and it lists 16mp 16:9 5312x2988 and 12mp 4:3 3984x2988. So it looks like the S7 12mp camera is effectively just a change in aspect ratio. The vertical resolution should still the same.
