mir, 01 Jun 2016FYI average is not mediocre. Mediocre is at the bottom end ... moreIts mediocre because its poor, but almost everyone else has poor battery life too. Except Samsung, Xiaomi, and what Sony used to be. But then again HTC and Lg used to be good too.

Alien, 01 Jun 2016I'm only interested in the following:
- SD 820
- 5" FHD d... moreCan't argue that the design in a selling point for the device. Its just too thick for me though, if they trimmed it down then the number of problems I have with the device would just be commercial stuff and the mediocre (but average) battery life.
I consider all the concessions to be commercial factors that could have been acceptable if the price was lower. But stuff like not having a fingerprint sensor makes it feel so outdated though. Even cheap Chinese phones have that nowadays. You're giving up a fair amount, but still paying the same amount (or actually more by the time its released).
And the support for flagships is the same, the z2 with the snapdragon 801 got marshmallow like the s5, but the z1 with the snapdragon 800 released a few months earlier didn't. The s5 still gets monthly security updates (although it skips every other month or something now).

I get it that Sony is keeping subtlety in mind when designing this phone, but it looks too bland, IMHO.

The end part of the conclusion sounded very pathetic to me... from a giant company now resorting to sell their phone like a small upstart OEM company... they are sensing that the end is near

Definitely sounds like a licensing issue for someone else's patented technology. Looks like Sony was unwilling to pony-up the fees for the right to sell their device with the patent owner's technology in the U.S. As one commenter pointed out, he purchased his in China and uses it in the USA and it works fine so there is no technical hardware/software reason why this feature would be omitted from a U.S. release. I also doubt the omission was to increase the margin on the phone given that no flagship phone can compete with other flagships if it lacks a fingerprint sensor without possessing an exclusive feature that a decent amount of the market wants. If it's priced as a mid-ranged then it would be a no-brainer and would probably have a high volume of sales. I'm sure that's not going to be the case though.

- SD 820
- 5" FHD display (no QHD)
- Waterproof
- SD card slot
I'm not into changing my phone every few months, so I thought about this setup a lot.
The list would be a lot longer if I'd point out what I'm not interested in lol.
Sure, it would be nice to have 4GB RAM, but I think that having FHD makes up for it. Everyone forgts it has the same specs as the S7 (processor and graphics chip).
The S7 is a beautiful device, I'll give you that, but it's not my cup of tea. Too shiny, too roundish and the no 1 factor that makes me say no is TouchWiz. I simply hate that interface.
Currently I'm using XZ (black) and I love that it is almost square. I even like this design more than the XP. I used HTC in the past and when I saw Sony's almost vanilla stock Android I knew that's what I want. And the quality build feels very premium comparing it to Samsung.
Ive had the XZ for 2.5 years now - almost no ware and tare without case. My sister's S6 with casing looks like is form 5 years ago. Also the USB port in Samsung phones seem to brake very easy and often.
Sony provides best updates for old devices while Samsung forgets them after 6 months or so on purpose to make you buy a new phone.
I was tempted to get the S7, but in the end I will go with the XP. And after, maybe Project Ara second gen :)
I love the idea of building your own phone.

This phone is a shame. Thick, no 4K video, small battery, plastic sides are biggest mistake ever. Using plastic in a flagship is a crime. Horrible screen to body ratio.
Samsung S7 is better in every way including screen resolution, and more RAM.
This phone is not worthy for a flagship, this is inferior.

I agree with the statement that not all users need flagship specs, but then why on earth would they overpay for lesser specs? Sony is pricing their devices outside their specs bracket, and in this light I see that statement as pure "intellectual dishonesty" -- they may not need the better specs, but for the price they are paying they sure as hell should get them! Madness!

Anonymous, 31 May 2016I'm in the U.S. and will tell you not having a fingerprint ... moreAgreed. I've been looking forward to this phone since earlier this year because its the only 5.0" flagship... and now I've moved on when I heard about the fingerprint sensor.
News flash: USA is a 1st world country who wants the best of the best. Stroke our egos! We will not take a lesser model than some 3rd worlders.

Then no point in making the US version at all.

They should really do something about what is likely the worst screen-to-body ratio in the market.
