Samsung Galaxy Note7 review: Thinking Big

16 August 2016
All great speeches start with carefully prepared notes. For yet another year Samsung has taken the role of a modern-day orator, pushing for a return to personal handwriting against the trend of detached digital text.

AnonD-259899, 17 Aug 2016A lot of Samsung marketing slide copy paste I see in your p... moreI see why people make comments telling me 'not to bother'..

In fairness I went to effort to write to you from a fresh perspective, words, well reasoned by 'a clever consumer' who makes a living recommending fair and correct technology based on peoples needs.

I have a Note (4),.. and am VERY AWARE of the differences between these two models.
And most of the 'marketing speak' hasn't been given out, and therefor I understand that you may not be happy with what you think is 'the exhaustive list' of changes.

Some of them are fairly minor.
Would I think that they are worth selling a Note4 for, and then paying the difference?
That would depend on your personal usage.
As you have made it clear you want 'longer battery'; it sounds like you are annoyed that it doesn't have a removable battery.. I can understand this new product doesn't suit you.

Other users,. positive ones, who see justification to jump on this phone,.. have found ways to add zero lemon cases or use portable 'bricks' to supply more power 'in field'.

If you do not see any reasons to jump ship, I can understand you are partly annoyed that your now ageing note 4, is either replace it, or reinvest in 'more batteries'. Perhaps you are annoyed at having to buy a new battery for it?
Mine still gives two days of usage (medium use/4g) and one day of heavy use per charge.
    Twenty months on....

I like it and wouldn't replace it if I wasn't getting a phone paid off each month with my phone plan, and wasn't eligible for an easy "Note 7" replacement.

All the same,.. the 'waterproofing' DOES make it sufficiently different to the Note 4, even if there were no other changes...and this isn't marketing silliness (Ingress Protection is a feature I wanted when I chose my Note 4)..

But you are not a person who suffers marketing hype...
So the Xbox with HDR isn't exactly that?
Do you have an HDR range TV? Oh really ? Is it LED,.. if so it must be a flagship!
Otherwise HDR won't amount to much.
It is just marketing on Microsofts part to make people not realise that they cheated out dramatically on the build of the first Xbox (One), only putting onboard a $40 video part when the competitors spent more on a better build that netted 40% more realworld performance in just about every title (Yes, 20% higher framerate and 20%higher resolution)..
I know which console I would hook up to my TV..
But for people who buy into that HDR marketing stuff: good for you!

For real HDR a gaming PC would likely be required, both consoles being fairly dumbed down.. and who cares, as most loungeroom TVs only render about 150-300 lines of 'motion resolution'.
(I actually enjoy the PS4, and 3xPS3s in the house on whichever TVs they play on,.. but they are flagship TVs and do an nice job rendering colour.. better than cheap HDR TVs that exist as marketing speak...)

Anyhow,.. one day when consumers come to realise that the first proper implementation for the masses of HDR WAS the NOTE 7... I don't care if you missed out on in whilst it had preorder bonuses etc..

The Note 7 is one of the few screens that does HDR well (just about all LCDs unless flagships certainly do not!)...
The size rocks.. it will be with phone owners where ever they go..
The screen combined with the excellent audio (again a big step up from the Note 4, but not revealed by the 'spec sheet', will make the Note 7 an excellent multimedia playback machine...)

I have a flagship bluray player that upscale the colour output of all media to proper high colour.. most bluray players might be 'hi colour compatible' but that just generally means they will play back the title,.. not particularly well.

The Note 7s HDR chip? well I hope the words here contained DIDN't READ like Samsung copy and paste....! (It is brilliant and better than what the vast majority have access to at the moment, nuff said!)

[deleted post]Erm because it really is? Isn't that what Samsung has been preaching everywhere, they have a phone to sell ;) that's what PR gets paid to do. It is a totally different thing when zealots parrot it all day long for a company that doesn't even know the said zealot exists! Lol that's just sad.

mmj321, 17 Aug 2016Don't you think these are the reasons the note 7 p**ps over... moreNope

water resistance - IP68 is a nothing more than minor deterrent, any sane person shouldn't test the feature apart from having the phone saved from accidental splashes.

Edge - gimmick - good for fanboys to brag about

S-pen nothing special Note 4 can do pretty much whatever a practical person hopes to do with the S-pen.

Dual -SIM this is irrelevant, it also drains more battery having two radios active with differing reception/quality of signal.

Looks, subjective, irrelevant, since when did people pay for looks? Oh right apple zealots do, sorry this is Android world so please keep that low mental faculties attitude firmly in the dim apple world.

Gorilla Glass 5, no more practically better than CG4, get a good whack on the edge especially along the plane of the crystal structure of the lattice and it will slice through clean, most of the times it just shatters.

Screen to body ratio, LOL another fanboy marketing hogwash, this even a feature? Wow I thought phones are suppoed to be used, not to be gawked at the whole day.

64 gb internal storage, nope, SD card slot says hi

"280mAh more battery", and yet battery life no batter than stock battery Note 4, LOL

USB type C, yeah to save the mentally incapable from destroying their jacks when they try to force fit the cable the wrong way, nothing great here.

Colors, lol now that's also a feature to pay for?!!, say how much does Samsung pay you to write these hilarious bullet points?

Better sunlight legibility, all Samsung flagships with AMOLED already have this trait, only a zealot will try to make something out of nothing new to justify the insanely high price tag

AnonD-259899, 17 Aug 2016How much is your pay for the schilling? Just curious. No... moreDon't you think these are the reasons the note 7 p**ps over note 4?
              Water resistance
              Edge functionality
              spen
              dual sim
              Looks
              Gorilla glass 5
Screen to body ratio of 78% vs 73%
              64 gb internal storage
              280 mAh more battery
              Usb type C
              Available colors
              Better sunlight legibility

an interesting phone...not for many i suppose..i use an s7 edge...an 'm not inclined to another phone untill and s9 i think..2 years on a flagship is good. people whole got the nnote went for 2 things, the larger screen or the s pen..if you dont want it go for something else..if you dont wat the iris scanner(how the hell does it work when your pupils are dilated, i wouldreally like to know that algorithm) get something else...get the lg g5..s7, oneplus3...there are so many options..i dont see why people are crying about cost?

'this is not an apple iphone' in what way can you justify iphone's price tag
How is it any better than the s7edge forget the note
                  Please bullet your points

PedroDNeighbor, 17 Aug 2016Good question. But I don't think so since it is not working... moreleave the fingerprintscanner...what happens to the water that fills in the hole for the spen, when it is used underwater?

Brilliant! So the Apple Fan Boy's will start comparing the feature set and create a Hate List!

That is to be expected as Apple's Sales are getting hammered due to having 0 to No innovation for past few years and in the future as well!

Its funny when an Android is released on a new device with amazing feature set and usability for less the price charged by Apple, people blame the innovation but pay for Stature!

I hate the Apple Eco System and the fact that we have to pay for even the small luxury as even a camera mount will set you back a 100$ whereas we can have a great working android for that price!

I would Urge people to try it by only for this iteration of Android (Galaxy Note 7 is a great device and 7 series of Samsung phones provide a beautiful Android Experience)

AnonD-367917, 17 Aug 2016You certainly do not represent the view of 7 billion people... moreA lot of Samsung marketing slide copy paste I see in your post as expected, nothing original, like I said nope it's a gimmick on a smartphone just because. HDR has a place in proper monitors for gaming and CAD not the smartphone. I represent the vast majority of people who don't care for bullet points on a market slide deck. The only people who care for this are shills and Samsung PR, for obvious reasons. The phone needs to be usable and deliver good battery life for the price they are asking. People don't gawk on the phone all day long for 800USD, this is not an Apple iPhone. When your product has no discernible improvements in overall usage over what was released nearly 2 years ago, it is a money grab pure and simple. An improvement in camera doesn't justify the price.

AnonD-367917, 17 Aug 2016You certainly do not represent the view of 7 billion people... moreDon't bother with him. He's the one that isn't worth it. While the note 7 will reap in tons of cash for samsung and give consumers the satisfaction of quality and utility, he will wallow in the insignificance of his existence. Just saying.

But i digress, some people are just deluded deviants that think they know it all and that anybody who thinks differently is an instant marketing sheep. Stay unhappy and dissatisfied. Nobody cares about you anyway so it doesn't matter to us at all.

AnonD-259899, 17 Aug 2016HDR is gimmick for smartphones. only place HDR actually wil... moreYou certainly do not represent the view of 7 billion people.
Whilst I do generally agree that much things on 'bullet point lists' with new product launches are 'spec sheet bragging rights' often with little real world merit, and even felt the same way as yourself with regards to HDR in this phone,.. upon reading DisplayMates screen rundown, I was pleasantly surprised...

Knowing that HDR has no set standards in place, most HDR implementations will prove completely useless, or have no practical benefit.
Once I saw the brightness capability for this phone, and understood the colour range the screen was capable of, I instantly knew that HDR would be awesome for many users.
When I found out that the dedicated HDR chip could uprender all video files, videophiles like myself start to get VERY interested.

Truth is the HDR will be a great feature and is implemented well.
Just because you have no interest in the feature does not make it useless to many.
The only question I would pose,.. (and it isn't really a concern to me), is if the 'offboard' (to the video processor) HDR chip will be able to feed back, to the main renderer, a split screen 'HDR upscaled' image,.. or else it will serve no practical use for VR movies,.. and that would be sad for people using a VR headset as an environmental light control..

A screen against the face makes this image appear bigger than the 'loungeroom TV', and lets face it; Samsungs OLED panels on these flagships are vastly better than what most consumers have in their loungeroom.

For many this will be the only HDR device they ever get to actually use..
I know when I got my Note 4/Edge, the panel was superb.
I started watching sitcoms not on the $8000 projector, nor the flagship loungeroom plasma (both in light controlled spaces- I calibrate screens as part of my profession!), but on my phone,.. loving the skin tones and black!

Lol whoever said the battery life of the note 7 is subpar is seriously looking for straws to grasp. It's not excellent admittedly, but it isn't below expected either. It's just right. As for hdr, iris scanner, enhanced s pen, gorilla glass 5, ip68, and the use of the most powerful chipset to date, these things make the note 7 a significant upgrade to say the note 4 or even note 5. All that for just a few bucks more. Not worth it? Stfu.

There are a lot of junk on smartphones just because, all of which are to merely trick the naive into buying the marketing hogwash wholesale just like you have, Nope nothing to see there.
