Google Pixel and Pixel XL hands-on: First look

4 October 2016
Android is by far the most popular smartphone OS - 7 out every 8 phones run some version of it. And yet its purest form, a Nexus device, is anything but dominant in the marketplace. A rebranding effort sees the "Google phones" change the name to Pixel in the hope to change the popularity as well.

Google XL.. its like you are going backwards. The only thing moving forward here is the OS. But the design and otherelse, its like a 4yrs ago samsung. Look at the top and bottom bezel, very big.

I am using iphones for the last 3.5 years quite satisfied with the performance and the main reason of using iphones is the same and that's performance. Even though there are numerous disadvantages of ios as compared to android like downloading media content, selective file usability, smart dialing, limited call log, no app lock applications available etc etc., but being a hard user of a cell phone makes me stick to iphone becoz of performance and above that taking iphone to max usage it doesn't get heated. Google pixel in some ways i think are directly targeting iphone as of there performance and other stuff the only thing i will see whether they can compete on performance or not (also the heating issue too). i have already used nexus 5 it was a good phone but still it needed more betterment. I hope Google pixel can go side by side with iphone as personally after the launch of iphone 7 i am really really disappointed and now i want a switch also i am waiting for Nokia to launch there flagship android phone. Lets see i think after max 3 months everything will get crystal clear

I feel price is too high. I am not a phone expert. But A price tag of INR 40000/- would have been appropriate. The secondary camera is just 12MP and event the battery is not very high for a 5.5 inch phone. No OTG.

There are many other phones offering similar or better specs at a lower price. Is that just for the "Google Assistant" ? Compare it with Xiaomi MI Note 2 which has similar specs better battery at a price tag of close to INR 30000/-.

Buy a affordable popular smartphone . if you care about updates. Just root it and load them with custom ROMs. As the phone is popular there will be a lot of developers working on it.
4.5 year old i9300 Samsung siii is still alive with marshmallow in it. This month I'll be updating it with nougat.
I have tweaked the audio chip in such a way that no latest phones other than galaxy series comes close to the sound quality of siii.

Aosp Android 6.0 + boefella kernel + boefella config app sound tweak + viper4android + wolfsonDAC makes i9300 an audiophile device.

a simple man, 10 Oct 2016You can call this phone pixel or whatever, its just another... moreThe things which I keep hearing so "exclusive" about this phone are,

1- An excellent camera, which might outperform all others available on the market and,

2- The software optimisation will be much better than Nexus and will be as close as possible to iOS's performance.

Until a proper review pops up I am not gonna believe any of this anyway. The phone doesn't even have hardware OIS! And the design choices are impractical, fingerprint scanner being on the back, that bit of glass material on the top part! Time will only tell how good it is. But yes, just changing label from Nexus to Pixel ain't gonna buy me, or quite a lot of users like us who have seen so much in mobile industries over decades.

Xiamo Mi5s plus has the same camera and some of it's specs are better.
Why pay extra 300$ for the Pixel XL, please explain Google.

Battery: 2,770mAh (32h talk time, 552h standby); Fast charging (7h talk time in 15min)

Battery: 3,450mAh (26h talk time, 456h standby); Fast charging (7h talk time in 15min)

Why is that Pixel has longer battery life than Pixel XL? Pixel XL has higher battery. Please explain.

Since all current camera have bigger apperture, camera tester team might want to include stray light test(like lamp post in night scene), haze effect(like bright sky under bush of leaves).

(Reply to JF69) To name a few things: Massive bezels (and on screen softkeys), no card expansion, basic camera and a fairly low capacity non replaceable battery. This isn't a flagship device and shouldn't cost as much as one. It would be fine if it was priced at the levels of a mid-range phone but the reality is your average customer is not going to find this good value for money.
