ZTE Axon 7 review: The brightest sound

26 October 2016
ZTE is back in the cheap and cheerful flagship race with the Axon 7. The company has its aim set up high, and we can't help but see the OnePlus 3 as a locked target. The thing is, the Axon 7 has a potential to aim for the stars of the show - the Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7.

I went to AT&T when my Iphone 6 crapped out (Thanks, Apple) and they sold me a ZTE to fill the gap in between the Iphone replacement. The ZTE sucks. Each of the apps - whether email or text or anything - crashes constantly. Trying to make a phone call is a nightmare. It's no wonder they sold it to me for $36. Nothing is free in life. Stay away from this paperweight.

Anonymous, 31 Oct 2016With Axon 7's focus on audio and dedicated audio chips/dac'... moreThey might not have switched to the dedicated DAC. The setting is buried in the Sounds menu, under "Headset HiFi", with options for "Standard" and "Super". It was probably left in "Standard", hence the poor results.

I've had the ZTE Axon 7 for 3 weeks and it's been great. The camera is better than I heard, the speakers are the best out there and it's buttery smooth. Of course with all phone there's a few thing I dislike like the buttons not back lite. But overall it's worth way more than the price.

The Axon 7 desperately needs Nougat! I have had a taste of CM14 and I can't wait to have it on my Axon. Great hardware needs great software.

With Axon 7's focus on audio and dedicated audio chips/dac's onboard I must say I'm very confused about the audiopart of this review. All other review's I have read praises the Axon 7 in the audio compartment. In one of the tests I read the test panel had to rewrite the scale in the way they test audio, because Axon 7 went over the scale in that department!!
Is it possible that there was an error or fault with the device GSMArena testet?

Please GSMArena! If you have the opertunity, please rerun your audiotest with another device!

I dont understand the low audio rating in the review when everyone seems to be praising this phone for its audio capabilities with its dedicated audio chip, what are we missing here?

UK buyers should buy from Amazon.de, not Amazon.co.uk...it's about £60 cheaper even with the postage.

No fm radio is unforgivable as it has to be disabled, why do cheap phones leave it on but as soon as you're into $400 territory they disable it.

Most probably the ZTE Axon 7 is the most value for money phone/phablet of 2016, & probably even more. And considering that it includes much of the high end specs for the low price of just $399 or so, it is the true flagship killer

This review confuses me. I had this phone for a month. The audio was fantastic through headphones but I sent it back because the camera was terrible. The reviewer has the opposite view, bigging up the camera and dissing the audio.
Just look at the studio samples to see how soft and washed out the pictures are. That softness is absolutely present in every picture you take and it doesn't matter how much work you do with manual mode, the optics are just bad.
If you don't care about the camera, this phone is fantastic: great battery, manageable size, lovely screen and breathtaking audio through the headphone jack. If like me you need to use a camera quite often, it's not an option.
                              What a shame.

Sibling of Lenovo Vibe X3. been using Vibe, other than a poor non-wide angle front cam no changes at all. Display resolution this high seems overkill at 5.5" diagonal.
so, if you cant find Axon 7, you can buy Vibe X3.
