Huawei Mate 9 Pro review: The Magician

12 February 2017
Dreams do come true sometimes, and the Huawei Mate 9 Pro is a living, better working, proof of that. Huawei has unintentionally created an unsolvable dilemma during the Mate 9 announcement, only to present the solution nearly a month later.

AnonD-624256, 13 Feb 2017Nobody wants to go through the hassle of messing around wit... moreAnd to me the king of cameras will always be Lumia phones! I don't deny the fact that pixel, s7family and iPhone 7 family have good cameras, but for me Lumia 950/950xl are the king of camera yet. maybe only google pixel follows behind, any real photographer will tell you 950/950 xl are the camera kings! And please you are not doing yourself justice by saying iPhone 7 is good in low light, kings of low lights are 950/950 xl,pixel family, S7 family and Nexus 6p.

This phone is a great phone with powerful performance and very good screen. The size of 5'5 is the best of size at the moment. It is between 5'5 and 5'5. The 5 inches and 5'1 and the 5'2 are becoming small gradually. I have the believe that in 2 years time the 6 inches screen phones will take over but with no bezels. 85 to 95 of screen to body radio of phones will take over the entire industry. The only let down of the phone is the no SD card slot thing. Apart from that everything is a plus.

Guys, there are like a whole world of phone models on sale - if one does not meet your exact needs, go find another one that does the job better. It's that simple.

Meh I'd rather get a phone from a more worldwide reputable brand instead, like the all mighty Samsung.

AnonD-510098, 13 Feb 2017Man, go back to your laggy samsung. Stop hating XDSome lag is fine if I get better battery, better screen, faster focusing camera on the S7 edge but thanks for the recommendation :D

AnonD-145316, 13 Feb 2017So if I may ask you, will you be taking 90% of your photos ... moreTBH he didn't say he had a mate 9. Also if anything gsmas own night shots don't do proper Justice to camera. Also by which metric are you saying it's low light camera is brilliant. So far only 2 devices have impressed me in low light.s7 and i7+ but I won't be buying them. Want a cheap alternative and I'm looking at mate 9. Since camera isn't a major concern for me as long as it takes good pics

And by the way mate 9 takes lovely night shots!! Go learn how to use a phone camera because this is not DSLR camera. People like you who always find it hard to appreciate a marvelous product just make me sick!! I guess you don't even use a mate 9 but you seem to know how bad it is in low light. You are the kind of people I usually refer to as keyboard users!! The ones who always complain behind their keyboards but never actually use the products.

Very good phone but I would go for the normal 5.9 inch version.

Curved screens are a gimmick and theres no need for QHD.

soceer, 13 Feb 2017at 128 GB, what expansion do you need ?That's what I thought when I bought Nexus5. Now, I'm stuck with its fixed storage but the phone is still plenty fast for everything. I want to save some high quality videos and FLAC audio in the phone for travel and some of my good photography in the phone.
I thought it was 64GB, but at 128GB this will cost a lot than a S7 Edge with 64 or 32 GB.

Anonymous, 13 Feb 2017me too. And no fm radio (dont' argue, streaming is a differ... moreMost are focusing to the average user like Apple has done with their devices without the audio jack. I know its fine to the average user as they rarely or doesn't use it all.

So this is what I get:

it looks like a samsung galaxy s6 edge and s7,
the display isnt as good because the samsung S7 had better sunlight contrast ratio so to all those people who said huawei would improve the amoled tech over samsung guess not,
has a worse battery life than a s7 edge even though it has 400 mah more battery capacity,
and in quite a few of the performance tests the SD and Exynos S7 edge variants beat the mate 9 even though the mate 9 came out 7 or 8 months later.

Granted Huawei UI is lighter so it feel smoother but for a brand new cpu im shocked it didint do better guess the 1440p display hurt its performance.

GSMarenas own words: Its AMOLED screen may not be Samsung-grade in color accuracy and sunlight legibility, seems like Samsung can get the best results from the screens they produce.

Anonymous, 13 Feb 2017me too. And no fm radio (dont' argue, streaming is a differ... moreAgree. Once upon a time someone stupid spelled "less is more" junk and the world is not going well since. This philosophy hadn't been spelled for this nonsense for sure.
I wonder when we will see a phone with a slab of screen but nothing outside. No buttons, no 3.5mm, no speakers, no microphones, no IR, nothing! Just a single slab of screen with a battery inside. This is too much (or too less to be more precise)!

Mate 9 Pro is also available in Scandinavia.

It's also compatible with the previous Huawei FCP (Fast Charge Protocol) that uses 9V/2A.

This phone looks like S7 Edge surrogate. Could be a good device for say half of price. Another example of Galaxy surrogate is HTC U. To be honest on modern market most of flagships look so much similar to each other that I'm ready to move to medium segment. Say, Galaxy A3 (2017) or A5 (2017). Both have the same design like last year flagship but cost half of price, have much better life and A3 has compact size (perfectly fits my needs). Even HTC A9 definitely worth more attention (sure, looks like iPhone but costs much less and still feels quite premium).

Thanks God, finally someone who understands my pain. Non removable battery is not a big deal for me, 128 GB internal storage is more than enough (I have yet to fill my 64 GB internal storage in my Zuk Z1). But that stupid arrogance from companies to deprive us from something that they can still provide us without sacrificing the overall look of the phone is beyond me. For example, FM Radio, 3.5 mm headphone jack.
