Our editors talk: 2017 flagships, Nokia, rants

26 July 2017
It might be high tourist season on the beaches in the northern hemisphere, but it's a slow period for smartphone releases. Makers are prepping for the climax of the fall that is IFA in Berlin and that's giving us time to reflect back on what happened in the first half of 2017 and what we're looking forward to in the months ahead of us.

Anonymous, 27 Jul 2017what we need is less monopoly and more chip makers, instead... moreMany people see phones as tools - so they just buy one that meets their needs, and works decently. I don't think they really pay too much attention to brand. Just like they buy their next power tool, furniture, or car. They don't have any obligation to advance tech - and that is their right.

I feel that you treat phones as more than just tools - maybe as some sort of technological agent, with duties and responsibilities. While I really think that is noble, that puts you in the minority.

      Bad trends:
      1. Near death of removable batteries.
      2. Thinness at the expense of battery capacity
      2. Curved glass screens (cannot apply tempered glass screen protectors)
      3. Low-end SoCs on obsolete manufacturing processes (28nm)
      4. Arbitrary omission of basic features on low and mid range devices (NFC, compass, fast charge, dual band WiFi)
      5. Limited security and software updates
      6. Glass backs
      7. Bezels too big or too small
      8. Bloated software overlays
      9. Lack of source code release, proprietary blobs
      10. Missing headphone jack

Rex Tech, 27 Jul 2017Maybe for you it's 375$.But in Europe where the pricing is ... mores7 edge really? and then you complain about not receiving updates
            mi6 is 2017
lg g6 even though the processor is 2016 is 2017
s7 shouldnt be talked about anymore
the more you advertise old phones instead of new ones, youll be at fault
getting a pixel for example now is suicide as the device will be obsolete in a year
google messed the nexuses even though it wasnt even a year yet remember? but everyone forgot about it and no longer cares. they just like to praise google

              just accept change
we shouldnt always stick to everything that is made just because it works

Dilmeet, 27 Jul 2017Little surprised to see no mention of how Qualcomm continue... morewhat we need is less monopoly and more chip makers, instead of labeling another chip maker that isnt american as not good and bad just because it is chinese. qualcomm is abusing everything , hence why we are limited to them. for example, gear s2 watch is now on heavy sale in my country yet i cant buy it because of the old processor it has that will make it obsolete very soon

along with many other phones such as nokia 6 with the 430

the new aspect ratio is cool, it does not matter either way it is still a mobile phone and you will get used to it

just because something works fine, doesnt mean we shouldnt look for something better
iphones with 5.5 are bigger than s8+
in a year or two everything will be better
but we should stop saying this is gimmick and this is not, otherwise, all new features will die and companies will go for the common mainstream ones that are safer just to gain money and not to lose

look at lg and how they are failing
because of all the people that labeled their device as a gimmick

ont tell me about bootloops as not a lot of people know about it and lg isnt about the us so whatever

see it is people like these who label features as gimmicks hence when people rread articles they might stop wanting that device. htc u11 has the squeeze feature,if they didnt have it, you would say that they have nothing to bring. mpodularity with the g5 was good, but because of these sites, the g5 was a fail. people who read articles are not a majority, but when these advise for a phone it all happens like that spread the talk then a phone would be a fail.

let me guess, what do you really want? everything to be similar? should all phones have the same thing? this is what is happening to lg now.. they went for the pressure and are going like any other even with the new screen design, they are still failing

AnonD-595251, 26 Jul 2017No offence, but honestly we have our own thoughts, everybod... moreno offense, readers have their own thoughts but I found many of them are silly

I don't like the tall aspect ratio in the S8 and the glass backs. The G6 could have been a nice upgrade for me, but I'd want an AMOLED display so an S7 Edge edges it by a small margin. The Pixel 2 is out for me as it is rumored not to have the headphone jack. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is probably the only thing that is left for me to be excited but it doesn't have microSD expansion. Oh, almost forgot the V30 with the AMOLED display but I don't like the small camera sensors of their dual camera implementation.

The Nokia devices are built as a tank but that is all about it though I never expected much.

I got a wish too, it's for the editors. Don't be bias like PA

Well i would like to see xperia xz1 or compact that's rumored to come out at ifa but not even a picture has leaked so far or a render

Little surprised to see no mention of how Qualcomm continues to ruin and abuse it's position in the market! Nearly every manufacturer has suffered due to lack of options from the chipmaker (software optimization in Android world is already challenging) barring Samsung (Exynos), Huwaei (Kirin), Apple and now Xiaomi (Pine Cone). OnePlus One business models meant something like this (OPO5 and price increase) will happen to sustain. But let's see what options we have in low and mid range? Only now we have SD450 and SD630/660 to improve the low and mid range handsets which had SD410/425/430/435/615/625/626 all built on old manufacturing with average performance and poor battery due to heating. After SD810, all OEMs reliant on QC suffered but Samsung/Huwaei were less affected. Does mid range or low end mean only battery efficiency? SD8xx have performance but not within reach of everyone. OPO3/3T offered a nice balance so far. If QC can have a broader range of SoC then probably we can have better performance products across and manufacturers can focus on some innovation. No Bezels looks cool but not practical, shatterproof by Moto is superior. Stereo speakers still rarity, HTC/Sony UI though stock needs some features, Stock Android now is at a premium (Pixel and Moto is little inconsistent with updates), other Chinese OEMs have similar iPhone like UI and Samsung UX still slows down (using A5 2017). Unless we have better parts, how can software or anything specific do wonders?

I don't like the new 18:9 elongated screen ratio.. But I would love to have a bezelless screen.. D'oh bezelless means elongated means 18:9 ratio.. You cannot have a bezelless phone with 16:9 ratio.. I don't understand these people.. They seem so smart when doing the reviews.. But in this article they seem stoopid to the point of parroting what the others say with no original idea whatsoever.. Very disappointing article.. I'm ashamed really.. Now I can't recommend this site to anyone because they will question my sanity if they read this article.. Please don't do part 2 or whatever..
