Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact review

25 September 2017
The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is a rare breed - it's small on the outside, but big on the inside. Packed with all the latest hardware and having only a small screen to power, Sony’s latest super-mini may very well be the performance champion to beat. But whenever there is a superhero, there is a villain lurking in the shadows. So yes, the Compact has its own battle to fight that’s not all about size or speed.

In your review on last years Xperia Compact you complained about the Volume rocker's awkward position on the Right side, "The volume rocker is below the power button, and we've been rambling on and on how Sony has placed it too low for comfortable operation" In this latest review you say the Volume button is on the left side??? and neglect to mention the button has moved to a new position??? Hmmm.

So disappointed that it wasn't released in the Philippines and many Asian countries. I would've bought one in a heartbeat instead of the P10 (not that I regret it though, battery life is pretty good and camera quality is pretty excellent, it's only the size that is kind of off-putting).

I am getting huge signal strength fluctuation with this phone. It keeps going back and forward between full signal strength and no signal at all. Sometimes I have to wait 15-20 minutes to get mobile data at all where as I get full stable signal with the same Vodafone and O2 SIMs with other phones. This issue makes the phone unusable.

Anyone else is having this issue?

Its amazing that in the android landscape the only 4.7" choice is the XZ1 Compact or the A3.
I was tempted to buy an A3 and go sim only but the price has not budged here in UK since launch all the way back in March. I am loathe to enter another 2 yr contract but I think the XZ1 Compact offers enough to get me through without regretting it. It's actually priced very well by the carriers Vs. the XZ1.

PS. Agree with Droag below about protective cases adding significant bulk. I had a Pixel but with a Supcase it was size of a 5.5" phone. 4.6"/4.7" with a case and you're looking at around 5" mark. Need the case for work!

IP68. 3.5 mm headphone jack. Great compact body without compromising on flagship internals. Good screen. Outstanding battery life (A return to form for Sony after many years). Qnovo & Stamina. Android Oreo from Day One, with close to stock look.
Superb performance with awesome onscreen GPU performance. Great Sony propreitary multimedia package. Good camera's (front and back) too.

After the XZ Premium, the XZ1 and the XZ1 Compact, it's safe to say that SONY IS BACK!!!

Now waiting for that stunning all-new bezelless Sony flagship.

This is the kind of phone I am looking for. Don't want the 5" phones.

4.6" is great, and easier to fit in the pocket with a protective cover.
If people think that .4 inches is not a big of a difference. Then why some phone have 5" and 5.5" displays.

I am glad that Sony keeps making compact phone with smaller Screen size than 5".
And the fact that is packs a 720p resolution is absolutely fine for as well.

This is the XZ1's purpose. Be a compact size of the XZ1, with the same power in a smaller size. Having 720 resolution is absolutely great.

I was looking to replace my phone for some time. Couldnt find a compact phone of my liking. And the previous compact Sony phone, did not impress me.
The XZ1 though, seems quite interesting.

And I wanted it to be waterproof or resistant.
Preferably waterproof but resistant works and the XZ1 delivers.

The oled project between Sony/Panasonic ended years ago.

Even Z2 has better audio than S8, i8 or Mate 9. Quality is not about loudness.

The reason nowadays phone makers don't use metal casing is because of NFC, metal casing affects the performance of NFC, that's it.

Buyers of this kind of phone are expecting 720p for better battery life. If you want 1080p, stay away from here and look at all other flagships with 1080p. You have a very big choice with other phone or brands. So don't waste your (our ?) time speaking here.

Someone up top is making very poor decisions shooting themselves in the foot. They struggle so bad yet could so easily make certain things just enough better and actually market the device and maybe actually release it in more than one location and they could potentially make great profit.
