Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium review

27 August 2018
The third-gen Premium comes with Sony's first dual camera, a larger 5.8-inch display that is still 4K, and a due upgrade in the internals, all in a chunky package. Let's see if the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium is worthy of its name.

And it costs less. It only cements the conclusion that the XZ2 Premium has nothing 'premium' to offer in the claimed 'low light photography prowess'. As the GSMArena team has said, there's no sense in buying it at its current high price because one can get better low light camera performance for much less. And if as you said, photos captured by XZ2 premium are for mobile viewing only, then you might as well buy the Pocophone from Xiaomi and use the savings to buy a Sony Playstation. At least, you're still supporting Sony.

Anonymous, 29 Aug 2018The Pixel 2XL for sure. And ironically, it's an older phon... moreWhen I scale down to 8MP (which is only fair option since you can't upscale P20 Pro 10MP) the only thing I see is how XZ2P preserves the details and has the least amount of blur compared to the two. You can clearly see preserved texture everywhere especially on rods of wooden counting toy. What XZ2P does dramatically worse than the other two is amateurish sharpening to the point of ghosting effect and cranking up the color contrast into oblivion. When it comes to noise you can always remove it but you can't never add it if the image doesn't have enough data to replicate details properly.

In my opinion low light photography is about preserving the detail in general, exposing details in dark areas, preserving the ambient color (light wash), containing the highlights and not exhibiting blur or smearing. So far XZ2P does the most except containing the highlights along side what I've already mentioned by cranking up the contrast/saturation and over sharpening to amateurish levels.

In all honesty neither three of them are any good in that benchmark low light situation. Post processing and lack of quality is evident on all three and all three exhibit it in different way.

Once you are ok that mobile camera's purpose is to take images and videos that are to be viewed on mobile screens only then there is no need for a debate which crap smells the least.

Just because two phones have nearly Identical specification on paper, doesn't mean that they are of the same quality and should be priced near each other.
I'll give you a very simple example,
You can find similarly speced motherboards with stiff difference in prices simply because the more expensive one have better fail safe capabilities than the cheaper one. Thanks for trying to engage in a civilized discussion by the way.

Do you have a detailed list of whatever is in it to even support that? Anyways please enlighten us and don't just generalize, I would like a good discussion.

I really hope they can change their design. It looks modern, but there's more bulk and more inconvenience to the design. Have been anticipating for the Mirai design they have talked about before and I hope that Sony isn't referring to this design. The XPERIA XZ2 I have may not look as thick as it is in photos, but u can definitely feel the bulk to it. It feels comfortable, but with the compromise of not staying stationary on the table, I'd rather stick with my XPERIA XZ as my daily driver (Which is what I did), and put my XPERIA XZ2 as another smartphone of my collection that has yet to convince me. Same can be said to this XPERIA XZ2 PREMIUM, with more bulk which I don't know why and more inconvenience, because of the addition of one more camera on the rear. At least there's some aspects of it that I'm impressed at, the 4K display (Which isn't a big deal for me, I'm already satisfied with FHD), Dynamic Vibration System (Which I don't give a damn about but it's still a decent feature), and the camera (Especially the Ultra-High Sensitivity). And of course, all of these comes with a price that I think it's too overpriced, given the fact that smartphones at this price like the GALAXY NOTE 9 gives more features, but I'm not saying it's a bad phone, it's just that the price makes it not as competitive as others...

Physics will always win.
And even if he had compared P20 Pro's 10MP photos and XZ2 Premium's 17MP photos ONLY, it would've made no difference at all: P20 Pro would crush XZ2 Premium. You can change the white balance of a photo afterwards, but you definitely can't recover crushed shadows, blown up highlights and overly noise-reduced details.

Yann, 29 Aug 2018As a XZ Premium user I can say the fact the this phone is b... moreThese phones are phablets "designed" for two hands usage even if you have to answer the phone call which is ridiculous. Anything over 72mm (for my hand 70mm) wide is a two hand device, reason why I can't even hold the XZ1 in one hand either so I would rather have the XZ Premium then if I have to use both hands anyway. I guess it's good if you are big guy with big hands but an average user can't even pick up a phone call with these phones.

In my opinion in order for a phone to maximize it's screen estate it needs to have proper ration between width and height. Width is very important because of text and characters that can slot in single line and take less screen. That's why same diagonal size 16:9 or 16:10 is a lot more comfortable for reading text than 2:1(18:9) screen which either cuts the text line or it scales down the text in order to keep the fit. There is no way around the width unfortunately. What 2:1 screen do well is they give you psychological advantage that you have more screen estate cause your phone is taller but that extra height is not fully supported by Android UI, as a matter of fact you can see on tall 2:1 phablets a lot of empty space because Android would not shuffle the content over it, it does not scale right with 2:1 screens. Tall screens on phablets also introduce lots of hand travel as Android UI consists of headers and footers in every single app so your hand is always hunting that hamburger menu on very top and back button on very bottom.

2:1 screens are good for one hand usage (up to 70mm of width) as they give you enough height to space out ugly Android app UI headers and footers on small screens but 16:9 is a lot better aspect ratio for anything that's 73mm and above for two handed use.
