If you look Portrait shootout part 1 scene 3, you will see all the phones doesnt have good details about that guys hair except D750 and Pixel 3.
Pixel 3 is absolute winner about the portrait part 1.

Are you aware... moredont you read the article? they use 50mm lens to give it a chance to the phone!
and the phone's portrait is usually around 50mm equivalent so 50mm lens is a good reference point

Scene 2: Dont like what Xs Max did to her hair colour vs the D750. Good detail in showing her skin imperfections but Asian users will want the face skin details to be more subdued and with skin whitening effect, no wonder why phones with more image manipulation and beautification are popular in Asia while the same phones are unsellable in Europe. One has to look at the different markets to know whats in demand, China want beautification, Philippines and Thailand want skin whitening, Europe want more natural, there is no international winner.

well for me try to see every details of those photos as you can see the best details photo taken by MATE20 face leaves body for me if you are really nice picture then you should go in Hawei mate20 is the winner here.

i didnt have pixel at all but photos taken by pixel 3 are far better than the others inthe competiotion

Gsmarena did not have to make this test comparison, but I do appreciate gsmarena's effort to make smartphone buyers know just how smartphone manufacturers can exaggerate claims of 'dSLR or professional photo quality'.
NO fake bokeh from ANY smartphone camera NO MATTER HOW EXPENSIVE, can even begin to come close to the quality of real portraits taken with a dSLR using a fast prime lens (usually normal to short telephoto lenses which are the usual lenses for portraiture). Yes, even smartphones that cost more than a cheap dSLR body and a cheap prime lens combined (iphones, pixels, mates, P20's, galaxy flagships, etc.). And the portrait bokeh comparison becomes even more humiliating for those super expensive flagship smartphones once the light levels fall and the high ISO's kick in.
Change the dSLR lens to an even longer 85mm F/1.4 and shoot at F/1.4 and the sheer bokeh quality and image details of the subject in focus will make smartphone buyers who fell victim to FALSE claims of 'professional photo quality' by smartphone manufacturers and Youtube reviewers cry for wasting so much money thinking the phone's photos can really substitute for a dSLR and a bag of lenses.
I'd suggest gsmarena include in part 2 of this 'smartphone camera' portrait shootout, a price comparison vs. portrait output quality on low light, social scenarios. A cheap, entry level crop sensor (APS-C) dSLR with a cheap manual focus Samyang/Rokinon 85mm F/1.4 used at F/1.4 indoors (or low light) vs. the same expensive smartphones with their fake blurs to let smartphone owners obsessed with smartphone cameras as their primary upgrade justification see why they might consider holding off the smartphone upgrade, using their older smartphones longer and buying instead a cheap entry level dSLR and some cheap prime lenses (50mm F/1.8, Samyang 85mm F/1.4). The money they save, they can treat themselves out for making the right decision.

Note 9 looks the best overall, then in this order:
Mate 20 Pro: the best depth and great detail, the colours look pretty but they seem pre-processed
iPhone XS Max: great overall, good detail but colours are a bit off and depth slightly lacking
OnePlus 6T: good overall
V40 ThinQ: average overall
Pixel 3: looks fake, like foreground cut and pasted onto a blurred background, no depth just looks 2d
S9: flat colours all round, no depth

Vefy interesting, but bokeh is not the only kind of portraits technique. Fashionable but not even the best. Blurring often making portrait look selfish, crappish and unnecessarish
