HP, 30 Dec 2018Xiaomi is a clear winner in 2018. Read all the article and ... moreSame boring and manipulated theme by this Arena. Here's why:
1. Worst comments about Sony, that in every speed test in real life and Youtube is better (in many aspects) than the so-they-call 'notch' Cr-Apple and S(h-eat)sung.
2. Face detector, eye sensors, voice ones?? Only gimmicks! Cr-Apple screwed all its users in regards of protection by its very bad updates. Cr-Apple apps and protections are only a paid for it lie. Stop buying Cr-Apple! It's patrolled by Satan's of FBI modes!
3. Samsung and Huawei were having way too much advertising! In real life tests were only medium quality and heavy loaded by self distruction settings (who has a more than 2 years Sammy working perfectly it's an undesired exception for its rulers) and non usable apps.
4. Cameras?? Do you think that a selfie camera blurr bokeh effect can make difference about camera quality? There are so many lonely and empty hearten people on this earth for this bokeh to win camera modules?? Did you know how many people buy smartphones only for this crap option? Sony did quality with one sensor as same as did these with more than 3 cameras. But it needs some settings. Who cares? Surely for Arena is a big NO!
5. Battery life is same on all devices with some very few small differences for the Oled ones. Sony managed best recharging time, battery life and battery quality.
6. Screen. Sony did it best with its LCD's no matter how old or classier they are. Its Oled K.O.-ed all other on the market nowadays. Cr-Apple, S(h-eat)sung, LG are now exploiting the first concept modules (of many years behind) of Sony's, that Sony badly decided to quit developing them and selling them.
7. Jack? Do you know that Sony from MW-600 device to now SBH24/54 ones how good they are? I am still having and sometimes using the MW600? And many of nowadays wired headphones are so low in quality? Stop using this pretext.
8. Sony is the most expensive?? How is Cr-Apple at same performance?? Geez how much guts on some people for making money sharing fake news and bad vibes!
Some people don't care about truth. For the others take care and have a blissful 2019!

Second screen takes much more space (Which translates to smaller battery)than a second camera, and costs more. And makes the phone even more fragile on the back.

It has no value only inconvenience. If I have to dig deep for an advtange is for one to get a transparent/clear case and it will look quite nice. Without the transparent case, one will have to cover the back with a protective case for protection and/or better grip. Now we have a phone that is a bit thicker, heavier, uglier, and costs more.
My complaint becomes less powerful with an upcoming trend though. I like the dual display implementation from Vivo and ZTE Nubia for a bezeless phone. I don't need a front camera and I will get a phone without it in the future.

It wasn't all bad except for the price hike on flagship phones. Good thing Xiaomi went against it. I wanted to support Xiaomi by getting the F1 but I have 2017 flagship phone.

Xiaomi is a clear winner in 2018. Read all the article and you could know clearly that even Samsung and Huawei is starting to weary about Xiaomi almost total monopoly on budget to entry level and mid range levels.
Its kind of too early to put hope on Realme. However, Oppo themselves is doing quite well for now.
Sony and LG is still on same old same old. Sony is under performing since they are not willing to hear nor bother to interact with consumers criticism and direction. XZ3 is a good start but a Sony without a tiny problem will be hard to find where its battery is an issue this time, mediocre and less juicy.
LG is slowly becoming the second HTC, hopefully LG will follow Sony moves by cutting down their unpopular yet losing their money phones such as budget to entry level and mid range levels.
I hate notch, even Infinity-O-Display will not curry a favour with me. "New Infinity" display that Samsung has shown to us is the real Future. I got myself an honor phone and Samsung phone this year. I could say that honor is doing well and Huawei should be proud of their sub-company Honor. Samsung less-notchy but still a notch trend in 2019 might loose me in 2019 on Samsung Save a Date, but I will wait for that "New Infinity" Display from Samsung. Thank you gsmarena, you are #1 top tech site on my list this year 2018.

It continues to amaze me that dual band GPS, which was introduced this year beginning with the Xiaomi MI 8 in June, and now has expanded to 11 phones as of the end of the year - has got basically no press and no hype at all.
Phones which support it: https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sFreeText=Yes,%20with%20dual-band
This is a big deal. It represents location fixing and navigation at tight as 30cm accuracy, and it penetrates buildings better than conventional GPS/Galileo/GLONASS/Beidou. All four of these GNSS services support this second lower frequency band today, so all that's required is owning a phone that can use it.
This jump means location accuracy an order of magnitude better than we have seen in phones up to this point, that can't do better than 3-4 meters. True, it isn't as obvious as "how many cameras are on the back of a phone", but this is a feature I hope we see in a lot more phones in 2019.

2018 is Android's year. It's strength, endless customization, really hits all the market segments. Apple on the other hand didn't focus more on the iPhone. More yet, they released other marketable products like the Macbook and the iPad.

Sony Xperia XZ3 is definitely the most underrated phone of 2018 in part due to Sony not seemingly being able to market it properly. Excellent camera and the best screen on any smartphone! Amazing. Pixel/Google doing amazing things with a single camera and superb front cameras although one gets used to the deep notch, as I don't really take selfies, I'd happily lose the notch! Manufacturers should bring back the headphone jack no real benefit from losing it discernible so far and LG/Samsung have shown it still has a place. Consumers need options and why use a dongle when you can just reinstate the 3.5mm jack....duh........! Journalists pretending Apple invented the notch. NO! they did not the Essential Phone had a notch (better implemented, granted no face ID)!! It will be a pity to lose HTC but given Google practically gave the company a free $1B......guess the company can't be saved unless it really wants to save itself....! Happy 2019 all...!!!

Anonymous, 29 Dec 2018Notch not even useful on android phones since they don’t ha... moreA notch is just ugly whether there is a purpose for it or not. Face unlock is something I will never use, simply because it is not as handy as fingerprint unlocking. At the time I face the phone towards my face to unlock it, it is already unlocked by my finger. The OEMs just copy it to get more screen, like they now implement a hole for the camera only. The notch is only a trend under the OEMs, the consumer needs to adapt because there is simply little choice left.

Many trends are stupid, but some are more acceptable than others.
Sealing phones and getting rid of the easy-replaceable battery were bad, but we got fast charging and some battery optimizations, so smartphones last a bit longer now. That was bad, but not that bad.
Then we got fragile glass bodies. Pretty, we got wireless charging thanks to them, but also got very fragile devices. One unlucky drop can cost you up to $500. Nice but not nice.
Notch was created so we can get more screen. Problem is most of the phones with it also have an ugly chin. So actually we haven't got any more screen. Just more ugly looks. Now we get a hole in the screen, which is even worse, cause it's lower on the screen, covering more UI than a notch would.
Removing the headphone jack removed series of accessories. People say they don't miss it, they use BT. But you could use BT even with headphone jack, but without it you gain nothing.
I only hope we won't get even more stupid trends than we have now. Right now diversity is almost extinct. Most of the phones look the same and behave the same. And that's the worst trend of them all.

"Samsung and Sony were among the few makers to avoid the notch race in 2018. But it's hard to say whether that's due to an unusual reluctance to follow Apple or merely they are slower to adapt their product planning than smaller companies."
That is some serious RDF brain damage there. Samsung is the company who made the notch possible. They're the ones who made the screens.
PLEASE!!!!! Stop trying to find the most pro Apple angle on everything! It's pathetic.
Saying that everybody blindly follows Apple's stupidity is also so non-factual it's frigging annoying to read. The biggest brand in the world, that same company who wouldn't touch a fugly notch screen with a six foot pole, doesn't.
