Honor View 20 hands-on review

10 January 2019
The Honor View 20 is a long-anticipated and teased smartphone that was released last month but this is the first chance we got to be acquainted with the handset here at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. To be frank, we had some private time with the View 20 on its launch date but we can now tell a bit more about the device and what makes it stand out.

A question is inevitable - "Will POCO F2 beat this challenge ?"

how does the punch hole camera work when playing games? I mean, does it cut that place and turn it into a bezel or let the camera distrup the game?

So this is basically a Mate 20 Pro, BUT much cheaper, with much better design,(flat screen and no notch) with a unique, spectacular color pattern and a 3.5mm Jack!!

      DAMN

Sensor size is still not as big as Nokia Lumia 1020

This phone seems really good! Great specs, big screen, headphone jack, decent price. The display hole seems rather unobtrusive, better than even waterdrop notches, I think. And the V-shaped reflections on the back look amazing!

All phones today look almost identical, and all phones from midrange to flagships all have good performance and good cameras..., the difference between midrange and flagships is so small that it is stupid to pay extra for a flagships that will feel obsolete within a year while a midrange phone will feel as good value for money for many years!

Huawei just keep on surprising and confusing everyone from mate 20s to nova 4 to view 20 and the upcoming P30s. -,-

For this price and specs, his device is gonna go places , mark my words

Camera samples look over sharpened and noisy even in daylight. Hope they are updating the image processing algorithm in future updates. Also what is the purpose of the ToF camera if it cant separate the glasses or hairs from the background. I think the ToF camera is not functioning now and will be enabled via future updates, just like Oppo R17 Pro.

Is that phone have face unlock?

I'm considering to buy this phone. It's really tempting. And compromises aren't big things in my case. Awesome phone for half the price of most of the flagships.

As for the IP rating, this isn't really a flagship, so..

Great all around as usual by Honor. International variant maybe starts from $450-$500. And for that price, its a bargain.

The new camera using 12mp resulting at 1.6um looks promising. The details when zooming in looks very very good. Check it out - https://youtu.be/u5lQWarZfhY

"...Going around the sides, we find the 3.5mm audio jack (yay!) as well as an IR blaster..."

Euhm... where did you see that IR-blaster? I don't see an IR-blaster at all, only the 3.5mm jack. Why didn't you take a proper top-side picture like you did with the bottom side?

Nice looking phone, I like how they have a setup where the light from the display doesn't interfere with the punch hole camera. The fact that they addressed this instead of pushing a software update later to dim the pixels around the hole is a great proactive move.

                                Pro's:
                                SONY IMX sensor
Nice Design with a small display hole
                                IR blaster is awesome
                                3.5mm headphone jack
                                Kirin 980

                                Con's:
No IP certification (big deal for me)
LCD at under 400 ppi (that's unacceptable even for this price)
Price for what you get is too high for me

Interested to see what they mean by the UI being geared towards younger people?

Are those samples AI on? Some low light samples would be nice and that blue.looks beautiful

This phone has all the ingredients of a successful flagship. The specs are top-notch. The camera shows promise. The design is simple but stylish (the V glow effect is really attractive IMO). The price is affordable. It even has the headphone jack (which is important to certain users). I think this phone is gonna turn out a best-seller.

"The View 20 can do 2X zoom, but since the second sensor is only used for depth sensing, you should know this is not one of the camera's native resolutions"
Gsmarena, of course they use the 40 megapixel sensor for the crops. Technically a 2x crop of the 40 megapixel sensor is exactly the same as a 52mm 12 megapixel camera with 7.7mm² sensor and f/1.8 lens (in low-light conditions equivalent to 1/3.6"-type sensor and f/2.3 lens).
