GPS navigation overview: Maps go digital

30 November 2007
What else can my mobile phone do for me? It almost makes you wonder if there still are people out there using their phones for calling and texting only. We’ve seen oblique, farfetched and elite options gradually become make-or-break for mobile phone...

I have the Holux M-1000, while trying to pair it with my Palm Lifedrive unit is cumbersome the bluetooth link breaks up in 5 to 20 minutes needing to reset the Lifedrive. On the other hand pairing it to my Palm Tungsten E2 works very well indeed but the 200mhz cpu in the E2 is unfit for mapping sofware it's actually to slow for turn by turn.

Thanks for the review, it is usefull

I wish you could shed some light on the performance difference between using built-in GPS reciever and BT one? I have heard that the later is time consuming in sync. and data transfer when the built-in receiver is much more effecient in terms of speed and data coordinates transmition

Holux M1000 and M1200 (here 240 slim) share the same Mediatek chip.

I use NAV4ALL in my K850, needs real time internet, but it does navigation, if you get lost or miss the exit it calculates the new route like a regular GPS. Oh yeah, the software is free

I bought an Holux M1000 to pair with my Nokia E61, figuring that at least I could use the built-in Navigator application to track distance driving and such. Later on I could add mapping software if needed. Anyways, the thing has a hard time syncing via bluetooth with the phone. I have to go into the bluetooth profiles and delete its profile first, then detect it as if for the first time. It works eventually, but kind of annoying. When it does sync up fine, it works great, picks up the signal fast, etc.

Don't forget Smart2Go - Nokia's new navigation app. It's available for Series 60 or Windows Mobile. It's also one of the cheapest - mapping is free, navigation is subscription (UK is 50GBP-ish for 3yrs) - much better than spending 200-300GBP and then having to pay again in a few years to keep the maps up to date.

                http://www.smart2go.com/

Also, some of the others have the worst possible anti-piracy protection known to man if you ever want to replace the device they are running on.
