Sonim XP1 review: Toughest of phones

14 August 2008
In the world of mobile phones it's all about diversity, and just about everyone has their favorite. We've seen enough of brand loyalty taken to extremes but it's for the first time we come across a phone that might deal with anything...

I'm liking this phone more and more.
Yes, the price tag is hefty ($549 AU here), but for that, you get 3 years of unlimited warranty. You do not need to buy another phone for 3 whole years!
Smash it, break it, dunk it, crush it, no worries. Come back in to the store with the remains, and walk out with a brand spanking new one! Not a refurb, not a replacement PCB, but a whole new phone fresh outta the box.
Still, GSM is right, a torch at least would be a big bonus. why not add a laser marker to the wish list too. Heck, add on a corkscrew and a can opener while we're at it.
All in all though, it's a phone that handles the tough stuff, and if you do manage to bust it, you get a new one. I'm yet to see another phone that can boast a $0 replacement figure for 3 years.

Why does it remind me of the old siemens M65 and its other brother phones. The similarities on charger input's plastic cover and the camera cover are amazingly close.

I work for Jag Communications in the U.K and can confirm that this phone is very popular with those in the building (or similar) trade.

Not had a broken one back yet.

The only problem I have experienced is a technical or software issue with the phone.

Otherwise, very reliable and with a three year warranty 'if you can break it they'll replace it' from JCB you cant go wrong.

Any imaginative manufacturer can make a custom skin/protector for any fragile mobile phone out there and win big sales. Even the manufacturer of the phones themselves can create rugged, interchangeable, and tough protector housings for their own phones and sell them like any other accessories.

See this by Mobil.nu in Denmark. It's in a danish, but still funny when they have to shot it in the end to kill it.

Here they try other things to break it, but it just won't give in

me, 15 Aug 2008to gsmarena: On your reviews "final words", gsmarena ho... moreBy putting down all that criticism you are not really reading the text, right?

                        1. First of all - there is a headset port, so why not include the headset in the first place? All other GSM handsets in Europe have a hands-free headset included.

                        2. Secondly - GSMArena team is not talking about bigger screen - instead they are talking about bigger screen font - do you know the difference?

                        3. And lastly - there are already military grade tough phones (unfortunately they are CDMA, not GSM) that have features such as a flashlight and a built-in compass (think Casio) and their toughness is not compromised.

So stop whining and go read another review.

                            to gsmarena:

On your reviews "final words", gsmarena hoped for wired headphones, larger screen and flashlight functionality. By reviewing the product, you should know by now that by adding more holes minimises its durability and toughness against weather conditions. Increasing the screen size also increases the vulnerabilty of the screens surface area. and lastly the flashlight functionality probably cannot withstand hard shakes, knocks and bumps.

My point is, the more features you add on XP1 the less tough it becomes.

After all, it is called "XP" like you said for Xtreme Performance.

Memory Card slot anyone? or a slide phone version? Lmao

It passed all tests, except tire burning :) Seems it can't handle high temperatures and it's normal. Was promised only 60C.
