Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review: Young as you feel

14 January 2009
It's touchscreen o'clock for Nokia and the stage is set for the 5800 XpressMusic. Go ahead and touch it. We did and we've got a story to tell. Now, it's technically not the first time Nokia get their hands dirty with touch screens, but it sure feels they really mean business this time. For Nokia 5800 is not the only story here...

Good Review. Like All 1st gen phones, it has issues.

If you are interested in buying, wait at least till firmware 20.0 comes out. By the time, the cost will be reduced as well as most of issues resolved.

The 5800 is selling for £300 plus on eBay...

...consumers need to wait a few more days and buy the phone direct from Nokia for about £250. Or get it free on a tariff of £25 - £35.

I think gsmarena got it spot on. My friend got this and he said it was a really overrated phone. The touchscreen(the main selling point) is poor, the browser is rubbish, camera not very usable, nokia maps pointless as it doesn't come with free voice nav. and the lack of 3rd party apps is frustrating. My nokia n82 is so much better than this phone, and until then i'd stick with the nokia non-touchscreen s60 devices.

                I dont like this phone

                It is ugly

And most important of all, I am so used of the very bad software firmware "engineers" of nokia, that I never buy anymore a nokia symbian

I am too tired to backup and flash firmware with the hope of so many bugs fixed

                Never more nokia

There are better phones anywhere else

okan, 15 Jan 2009i think you still haven't try the product itself don't jus... moreWell man, you would be surprised if I tell you that I have one here with me, I'm not making up those pros and cons. If you really tried it, you would know what I mean by poor build quality - it's not poor material quality, but build. It squeaks!!! I've never seen a bar phone squeak.

                      And to all others...

The Nokia 5800 is a really nice phone, but it has its downsides. I tried to point out the most significant ones, so you can make up your mind more easily whether it's worth it by your books.

The lack of third-party software is almost a deal-breaker for me at this point, while some of you might not even need any additional applications. So stop bashing and make up your mind already.

By the way, GSMArena recommends the device in their conclusion cause it's such as bargain.

GSM arena did right about the interface it is not as smooth as the competitors. but i can live with that for me its a minor issue given time i can get used to it and this baby is almost half there price so not a big deal. GSM arena gave many cons but those are just minor issues that can be fixed in the firmware update. after reading the review i will still buy this baby next week

I do like GSMArena Reviews, but this review was so rude. The compare with Iphone it´s not so fair at all. GSMArena forgot to say that Iphone´s weaknesses like ridiculous camera (iphone has no camera inded), no Copy&Paste feature, no tv-out, that bluetooth has no AD2P, the GPS Software of Iphone is really sucks and other issues. The list of IPhone Weakness its so great that´s impossible to write down it here. Iphone is better only in multi-touch and the browser and no more.

Many of 5800 weaknesses spotted in this review is easily fix in future firmware releases. 5800 has all features of a N Series phone. I guess that 5800 touch interface was designed to help the user and not to be a main feature like in iPhone.

if you want low price - K800/K850 may be - at least the camera is excellent and sound quality is more than good.

But again - get Samsung Innov8.

                              Hey Guys,

Don't Bash Nokia 5800 SO Hard, It's A Great Phone. Nokia First Attempt In Touch Screen Phones ( Apart From The Lousy 7710 ) So It's Just Like Any Other Concepts, It Needs Tweaks And New Firmwares, That's it. Those Take Time, So Stop Being So Critical of The Minor Issues, And Focus on The Features. As For iPhone Lovers, Step Aside You Cannot Bash Nokia 5800 When Your Phone Is Insanely Crippled.

I think GSMArena has got the review right. It's not biased or anything - the Nokia 5800 is not the best handset by Nokia and is more like a test sample sent to users and developers out there in somewhat hasty manner. Still it's a nice phone with rich features for a sub-300 euro price tag:

I totally agree and here are my pros&cons:
                                    Pros:
                                    3.2-inch high-res screen
Wide connectivity options: quad-band, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.5mm, microUSB
Rich retail pack (with 8GB card included)
                                    VGA video recording
                                    Touch Nokia Maps
                                    Excellent audio quality

                                    Cons:
UI usability sucks at this stage but does the job
Camera quality sucks and there's no geotagging
Limited 3rd party software (no popular IM clients for example)
Touch web browser not really user-friendly
Somewhat poor build quality and the dreaded "earpiece problem"

Dear friends, I bought two 5800 express music from nokia priority dealer in india, on 3rd of jan, was one of the first buyers. Both the phones developed earphones volume problem, after 2-3 days, Got both of them exchanged with new ones, but even they had same problem, i went to the store, and they agreed to the fact that its stupid nokia factory fault. They agreed to replace it again with the fresh lot that will arrive in next 5-10 days. God, i am really frustrated. hope new handsets dont have the same problem. I was even considering N85 , but its having slider problems.

Why nokia is compromising on quality to this extent?? Grr..

But apart from that , phone was a treat for its price ($400) , Tough i didnt like the camera, (my n73 was much better) , but rest everything was quite acceptable. browsing over wifi was a lot better , coz of the roomy screen. Tough not as gr8 as iphone , it was still a eye cather, then any other nokia phones in line.

GSM ARENA review was a bit on the negative side, but guys its a new OS , New concept and will gradually improve with FW upgrades.

And gamers please stay away from this phone, the phone is not multitouch, so it wont register more than one key presses at once.

Sound quality is awesome i must agree, i didnt use my ipod as long i had 5800 in my hands.

Build quality lot better that n85, over all , a nice package for its price and also future proof, as upcoming models will be based on OS v5.

So You may go for this model if camera is not your priority. (hey you can get a 7.1 mp nikon digicam, way better than any nokia camera ever produced)from just the saving you make, buying 5800 instead of n85)..lol..
well overall its a midrange handset , but some features compete the high class models..and as far as other problems said in the review , are not so much of an issue for this newly born baby(no phone had born perfect) , i still remember n73 taking bad pictures , but things improved considerable after upgrades.

Enjoy your 5800. Take care , bye
                                      Amit

I admit that the review has nailed the exact nasty things I was aware of, but I have the strange feeling they exaggerated a bit. And it's probably because they didn't mention all the other great stuff in this phone like I saw in other reviews. And strangely enough those reviews didn't cover up the "flaws' at all. It's just about balancing.

Also, something else: those that continue to compare this with iPhone or SE Xperia need to get a grip on reality: we're talking about phones that cost twice as the 5800 (unlocked).

                                        .peace
