17 March 2009
You usually don’t really see desktop software reviews on our front page, but last week you could have said that for Blackberry reviews as well. Well, it’s time for another first. Today’s article is about Sony...

After several weeks using Media Go, I appreciated this Sony software for managing my multimedia files. But...nevertheless the program did a "mysterious" DELETION of my multimedia files! Worse, it erased my daughters' childhood days video! It was weird enough, all videos ended with the AVI extension were all vanish into thin air. I suspect the dirty work caused by Sony MEDA GO! For all of my computer years I never experienced such catastrophe! Shocking to me, those video AVI files could not be recovered using NERO Rescue Agent.

A hard lesson to learn: before launching Media Go, you had better backup your multimedia files to a REMOVABLE harddisk. Never let Media Go terminate your precious multimedia memories.

I experienced constant glitches, the program freezed regularly and I had to reboot the whole thing. I tried re-installing it, no change, and my computer is more than capable of running a program of this caliber, so I can only conclude that the issues were with the progran itself.

Your xp runs on 2mb ram?
Not mentioned anything about the formats it can handle.
This software is to convert videos not to play videos in phones, so if w995 doesn't have widescreen, it is not media go's disadvantage.(it just needs common sense)

Great application. Where can I download this? I like this new walkman phone will check it out, but can I get the application already now to use with my current w910?

come on guys, this is a PC application, there will be plenty updates with more features and better quality coming along, it is not fair to judge off quality at this stage of early version. i am sure sony will great job, and i hope there will be demos in the shops when commercial start is with w995.

The Media Manager Was Made by Sony too. Makes sense that they use sony to make the software as they have a lot of experience. Could brand it themselves but that would cost resources to maintain.
Too bad Media Go doesnt deliver a super video conversion though despite its simplicity.

On my rig (Q9550, 4gb Ram, Gtx 260) it take no more than 4 mins edit a 30 mins video in HD (x264) to QVGA @ 30 FPS with 480Kbp/s bitrate on SUPER

One of the most significant aspects, (and perhaps confusing and even worrying for loyal SE fans), of this software package is the fact that it is being branded as Sony, not Sony Ericsson. Given that this is a software application designed for video management for mobile devices, specifically Sony Ericsson devices, why should this come under Sony branding? This will only serve to widen speculation about the commitment certain quarters have towards the Sony Ericsson enterprise. It is hope rumours remain just rumours and that SE continues to strengthen its position over the next 2 years by which time the mobile device landscape will look very different to now.

Interesting review. Obviously not a power video solution, but Medio Go and W995 seem to do the job for my video on the go, because I can easily manage time for transcoding. I think benefit of reduced memory on the phone is very important, like films on my PC are often 1GB, nothing I want to carry on my phone. And I am sure that eats battery also to playback high resolution stuff...
For me the "zoom into video" is not so important, and I dont think many people expect it on mobile phone. But I agree it would good to 4:3 aspect ration on the phone, or in MedioGo before transcoding. Maybe something that Sony will add in final version?
