Windows Mobile 6.5 review: Saving steam for seven

11 October 2009
The OS is half a phone’s worth and there’s little wonder everyone is trying to make it the better half. In the case of Windows Mobile the emphasis really is on everyone. Version 6.5 is up and running but is it the upgrade everyone was waiting for...

The Samsung I8000 Omnia II was indeed an inspiring performer but there's no escaping the fact that a large part of its charm was in hardware. From a software point of view Winmo 6.5 is also amazing. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 didn't manage to win our hearts completely but still had a trick or two up its sleeve. Conclusion:- Winmo 6.5 is a gr8 update but requires the compatibility of a range of great Hardware

Does it support password protected documents?
It is such a basic thing. Many documents are password protected for editing. But Windows 6.1 doesnt support it.
Imagine getting a mail which has such an attachment. You have to tell the sender "Sorry, I cannot use my expensive smart phone to view your attachment."

After usign the HTC Touch Diamond 2 with WM6.5, i cant wait for 7 to come out. Finally there is a windows mobile phone that has the hardware to match the software. Whilst not totally different 6.5 is easy to use. Bring on windows mobile 7!

Well, microsoft just hit the crap barrel with this one. Nothing near as user friendly as their competitors. Stay away, at least until the 7. update.

I have a cooked ROM that is WM6.5 on a HTC Touch Diamond, its great, ok its not the best OS in the world as we know, but it works well, I do think Android is the way forward though,

and the HTC Touch Diamond 2 has a official update man.

I have used in excess of 15 devices since 1994. These devices include famous brands such as Nokia, Samsung, iMate, HTC, Apple, and now Blackberry (8900 currently).

I find that WinMo 6.5 is really 6 and 1/2 hearted catch-up hail-Mary rendition of what Microsoft 'should' have released.

Most OS devs are moving towards a 5+ mp cameras for video conferencing capabilities and document scanning, intuitive (realistic instead of what the developer THINKS is intuitive) GUI, robust PIM, WiFi capabilities, fast processing, and STABILITY!

Microsoft is lagging behind in these several key areas as compared to each competitor. I think before catching up, it really needs to resolve a minor flaw in it's OS: STABILITY!

From what have read here, I think I should take my business back to Microsoft (or do you suggest I wait).

Moving from the Blackberry 8900 to WinMo device is something I am grinning about. But, I wonder if I want to dish out $700 for a mid-range WinMo device.

This is an admirable try from MS to try and update an already existing platform. What i mean by that is the core, or kernal, is pretty much the same dating all the way back to WinMo 5.0. I really love Windows Mobile with its flexibility and robustness, but i am quite disappointed about this release. Its a really good demonstration of the future direction of this platform, but being as it is not compelling in the any way. Its kinda like Windows Vista in a way. All hype and just did not deliver. I am definitely waiting for WinMo 7 to come out. I know that will be the killer platform once it will come out. Maybe once the bugs are ironed out, i will invest in a HTC HD2. That looks like the device to get.

People however do need to look at its functionality. I thoroughly enjoy using this platform a lot. It is amazing to me how easy and seemless Windows Mobile integrates with its desktop counterpart. I dont think Apple has that tight of an integration. Since my device is a WinMo 5.0, and its old, i still am very happy how much life i can get out of it. Android i would say is the next best platform, but i am microsoft all the way. My device is still capable of doing what the phones can do now, with some help of 3rd party apps. I can go on about it forever, but i do really have a great appreciation of the technology. I got my phone a couple of yrs ago on ebay fro cheap since i won it auction for cheap (my device is an E-TEN G500). I love the integration with my laptop running Windows 7 and my device. Skinning it really help revamp and breath new life into it, and i dont find it too difficult to use my finger. i got really good and accurate. All in all, i think 6.5 is good, but unnecessary to release. If they focused their energy on version 7, they would have had an awesome launch and would have had a major advertisement assault on the market if they launched Window 7 and WinMo 7 at the same time.

Anonymous, 16 Oct 2009So, the commercial impact of an OS is the way to measure it... moreThat's right, Mac OS is of very high quality, that is why it is on 93.x% of all personal computers in the world and Windows is only on 5% and Linux, approximately 1.x%.

Oh please, give me an effin break Mac Troll, you didn't have to drag Windows vs Mac into this because you know Apples a$$ is getting whooped in the computing world. You obviously don't know what you're talking about so do us all a favor and get lost.

Its a big joke when you see what the home screen is like. First impression counts and this fails miserably. So what next.... moved on to iPhone... and Android is the next. Just very curious why is the WinMo a business phone and the iPhone is not when there is tons of business application for it.

Its all about money, that is the way I see it. Microsoft just likes to keep people waiting, so much so, that people run out of patience and are willing to try the new hype OS. This is also because they are sick of putting up with the shortfalls of the WM OS that they are currently using. Now, a lot of people will probably go out and buy devices with WM 6.5 loaded, however when they see the shortfalls they are getting with WM 6.5 OS, they will probably want to get the WM 7 OS when it comes out and so and so on. Microsoft will never create the perfect OS, because its all about money.
