MWC 2010: Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Series

16 February 2010
One of the pivotal announcements this MWC was without a doubt the new Windows Phone 7 OS. There are yet no devices made to support it, but we've got some shots of a proto-type plus some lengthy presentation videos...

Snowboardfreak, 19 Feb 2010I was waiting 3 years for THIS CRAP????? WTF??? Microsoft... moreI agree.... I dont think they understand their audience here. Their basically setting up an OS structured for marketing and consumer use when their old audience was business users. I havent heard of to many companies remove features and then gain customers. I know for me I obviously cant go from 6.1 to 7 when I need to upgrade. This is very similar to the Palm upgrades that basically killed off their business user base.

Their also not leveraging any of the recent changes in the IT world. Their basically just following the pack (and what would be 2 years behind).

I was excited at first when I heard they were doing an upgrade however after reading a lot of the details im somewhat dissapointed. This is like replacing a BMW with a Civic because its newer.

If it really has no SD card support, and no copy/paste, it is a huge step backwards. FAIL.

This a milestone windows took, its cool, i don't know why people like iphone so much. Windows always makes better products then apple, they give everybody a chance unlike apple who have their own hardware.

Looks very cool indeed. Just with they took away the blue boring font and replace it with a nice transparent looking theme.

People complaining about the appearance of the OS need to remember that you can customize it to fit your specific tastes. Don't be so quick to dismiss something just because you don't like the look of it. If you don't like the way it looks, you can just change it!

Anonymous, 17 Feb 2010I tend to disagree. Although this UI is far more flashy, I ... moreIphone? Huge business user base? You are deluding yourself, mate. Business users prefer Blackberry and Nokia over the Iphone any day. Unless you consider anything that has to do with art and entertainment 'huge business'. Iphone is for entertainment only, and aims at an audience with that in mind. A business user needs an abundance of clear choices and customization. Not two-three buttons to push for instant gratification. Which is what this new version of WinMo seems to drive at.

Yeah I fully agree with Kitty Kat..Phone 7 Series from Microsoft is the most eagerly waited OS amongst us friends. This whole optimisum stems from the desktop Wndows 7 which is undoubtedly the best OS existed ever.
The boot up..color schemes & enhancement & excellent features are native to this OS for phones.Lets hope it would be available as soon as possible.

                        Seriously...
if this guy is in charge of how this OS is going to be, and he doesn't even know how to change the fact that the screen goes dark after 15 seconds (looked more like 10 to me)-
then I really doubt that this OS is going to be as customizable as I would like my OS to be.

I'll give windows another try, in 2.5 years. (the next time I buy a phone).

I like the idea of windows 7 it seems well thought out.
but one of the things i didnt like was how the home page looked so dull, the widgests could have been nicer and more finshed and with a bit more colour than that boring blue. to me the windows 7 seems like taking a maths test if there is some way to get out of it you will. I believe its a great phone but it just looks dull, dull

The best thing is by the time this OS is ready for release over the Christmas period the amazingly designed, fast as hell HTC HD2 will be selling Brand new for penny's (Hopefully).

drazen, 17 Feb 2010Itc way too much music player looking to me honestly, i lik... moreYou're correct with all you're points but they are all the reasons why this will work. Computing in your (The average human) daily life needs to be aimed at ease of use, clear relative options rather than ugly drop down menus and windows, easy access media (like the use of a TV, Camera or a Stereo) and finally centralised social networking portals to simplify communications because that was the premise of the computer when it was first invented.

The Nintendo wii did the same by creating a game pad out of a TV remote, every man, woman and child knows how to use one. The wii was bought by children, adults and grand parents which caused it to be sold out for a span of years!

Apple iPhone removed the concept of silly little sticks for poking at tiny little text on your tiny little screen because there's no better tool with carry case than your finger. Now they are the leaders in a market they barely know.

Mobile phones are remote's for life, not Desktop PC's and that's why windows phone series 7 will work or at least work better than windows mobile 6.x.

If Microsoft has any sense they will port this OS to the Pad's, slate's, netbooks and the Home version of windows 7 because that is the only way that the average person will change from Apple to Windows based on ease of use.

Strangely enough that is precisely what Google Chrome OS is aiming to do. Computing for everyone is the future, the Geeks and enthusiast are no match for the spending power of the global population.

Unfortunately, the market is demanding more and more flashy gadget interfaces, which screws with the actual functionality of the phone. However, when competing with an OS like iPhone or Android, I think WinMo7 is definitely a winner. WinMo always has been a winner and for a moment, I got scared they'd be overrun by Android. But when looking at this "hands-on" demo I think we can all stick to WinMo (thank god).
However, I do hope it will be able to disable some parts of the UI, else it might get a little too confusing, cuz when looking at this demo, there's going to be A LOT on WinMo7 phones.
