Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition review: Lead the way

10 June 2010
Navigation on a feature phone, are they for real? Obviously Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition is keen to surprise. It’s among the rather few feature phones that come with free full-featured navigation. It even has all the cool accessories...

    Margie, 30 Oct 2011You have shed a ray of ssunhnie into the forum. Thanks!At this lake i think you need to expierience the fight that these Carp give you when you hook them to fully unneastrdd how powerful these fish are.I have just spent three days fishing at Lac De Vos and managed to bank 24 Carp in that period up to 35-1 lb and my body feels like its just run a marathon after some of the fights the fish put up. I had one particular fish of 28-12 that took an incredible 40 minutes to land and i didnt even get a glimpse of it until the last couple of minutes of the fight. Now i have been Carp fishing for over 30 years in England and France and i can honestly say that i have never had a Carp fight that hard in all that time and during the fight i was thinking to myself this surely cant be a Carp that ive got on and that it must be a Catfish so when i finally got my first glimpse of it near the net i was a little bit shocked to say the least when i saw that it was a Carp. The only downer i had during this trip was when i lost a big fish at the net when the hook pulled which i would be amazed if it wasnt well into the forties but thats fishing i guess you win some and you lose some.The lake its self is a joy to fish with plenty of features to fish to with some lovely overhanging trees on the far margin to tuck your baits under and the margins on the side of the lake that you fish from shouldnt be ignored either as i had a fair few fish from these too.I took my own bait with me but purchased some of wizzards plum boilies from the owner while i was there and ended up using the plum on all 3 rods in the end as they seemed to be giving me more runs than the bait i had taken with me. Other pluses on this lake is that the swims are all on one side of the lake so you dont get anyone opposite you casting over your lines and there is a village which is only about five minutes drive away so any supplies you may need are easy to hand. In all a great lake to fish with a very helpful owner and i for sure will be back to have another crack at these fish as soon as i can.

            Good phone, a bit slow on start up and the navigation software is not so good (maps are gratis and available for the whole world, this is very good!). The GPS processor is slow to initialize (it can takes 5 minutes to detect the first position).
            Camera, sound and radio are enough.
            Regarding the whole phone features and its price, it is a good phone.

              Got this fone the other day and its brilliant for what it is.sure its missing a few features but they werent all that important to me anyway.love the fact it can take a 16 gb memory card,the battery lasts forever,nice big keys + screen for a candybar type phone and good photo editing for a low end phone as well..only thing i dont like is the cheapish plastic finish but you get what you pay for ($79 australian).the navigator works fine and is fairly straightforward to use.

                  The price is still high. You can get - for the same price - a better 5230. Its price would be not greater than 79Euro.

                    This is a brilliant phone. Those disadvantages are just minors, considering lifetime access to the GPS software. I would not regret spending my hard earned money on this 2710.

                          I waited a long time for this phone and lost interest due to its price. It is so high that it doesn't make any sense to buy it. The Nokia 5230 is way better value for money.

                          Does the digital compass serves any purpose for in car navigation? I heard it is only activated during pedestrain navigation.

                            And one more thing - the hardware actually includes an FM transmitter. Software, of course, is kept for the expensive models.

                            Something not for the simple target audiences of this phone:
                            If this FM transmitter had the RDS TA (traffic announcements) feature, then the navigation instructions could be forwarded to car radios, which would switch from CD/AUX to these messages.

                              When this was released, thought it was excellent move from Nokia and planned to bought one, but now I have already bought 5230 at the same price as this. Anyway I still think this is great product.

                                And, about charging off the USB - it is not critically needed, as it works long enough on its own.

                                  I'm using this phone for two weeks now. Impressions so far? Quite good!

                                  Pros (to me):
                                  Works quickly;
                                  Does the occasional navigation or location search;
                                  Very simple to use - minimum distraction while using it as mp3 player in car or a as phone in general;
                                  Easy on the battery (well, first time lasted for 5 days with more than typical usage - >2 hour navigation, several hours music, some calling, now the second time - 5th day at 50% battery, also with some navigation and music while driving every day);
                                  Optimal size and esthetics.

                                  Cons (IMO):
                                  No flashlight - this is almost a blocker for me (it is very, very often needed);
                                  Plastic feels slippery in my hands (very dry skin), but then again - most other phones are not much better anyway;
                                  Keys have flat surface and have very minimal felt separation;
                                  Mic is built into the keyboard and any touching of that during call makes very loud noises to the other person (not a problem normally, but with a long beard touching the keypad - quite ugly);
                                  Volume buttons could have served as zoom in maps and been generally beneficial.

                                  Some other notes:
                                  Screen size is marginal for navigation - it is ok to just drive where told and shown, but other info is unreadable if the phone is at the windscreen.
                                  Otherwise, the screen is large and very comfortable for the simple, well laid out interface it shows (It makes smartphones with QVGA resolution look very dated).
                                  The camera is crap, but mostly ok for note taking.
                                  GPS receiver is the newest from Texas Instruments - NL5500. Works very good.
                                  Processor is ARM9 @ 208 MHz and, technically, supports USB On-the-go. Not that software supports that...

                                  Ok, so far so good.
                                  M

                                        where can i download Nokia Maps 2.1 for S40? and is it compatible with Nokia 6275i?

                                        coz i have old Nokia 6275i (an S40 CDMA-EVDO phone). the phone has built-in GPS but it doesn't have any good GPS software (in fact, the only software available is Nokia's own "GPS Info" software, which is quite useless)
