Acer Stream review: White water rafting

03 August 2010
Acer may be new to the smartphone game but they’re learning fast. On paper, the Acer Stream has all the right ingredients to tackle the HTC Desire and the Nexus One. With much stronger emphasis on multimedia than the titular Google phone...

Even if they're new at this game, let's look at the "Main disadvantages" again:-
~ Dim display with poor sunlight legibility ~ Camera lacks flash and a lens cover ~ Generally poor camera output ~ No web Flash support ~ microSD card not hot swappable ~ No voice dialing, no video calling ~ No proper file manager out of the box

**Biggest of all that should have been included into the list is the custom Acer Touch 3D UI.Apart from HTC's much experienced Sense I can't understand what's with this fetish going on with every other Android phone maker on custom UIs.Heck not even Sense are perfect either?Rather than wasting resources into that they should just focus on better rooting functions or tools?User interface in itself probably takes as much mindshare and time requirement over everything else. The other disadvantages are probably due to Acer's eagerness at going media centric:- 1Ghz CPU for 720p.I'm NOT complaining I'm just saying that if you're new to the game do realize that even HTC place Hero and Legend specs on the line for a good reason.Baby steps Acer.Slowly but surely...

The faster fix they can do (or could have done already) for Stream 2 are relatively simple;leave the stock UI alone on the LATEST Android ver, invest in a good image CMOS sensor, algorithm and LED flash, front cam and LOSE those hideous 3 media keys at the bottom. There prob solved. It's not like Acer can really cut an AMOLED screen deal anyways based on current supply shortage but there's still Super LCD out there.

Your tests on GPS are always pathetic. You haven't even learned from the Samsung Galaxy S fiasco when the unit has serious problems with GPS. You just keep ignoring that on reviews or saying it is fine.

Please, stop using navigation apps that that "snap" to roads and hide errors most of the time. Just use some tracking app like MyTracks and then see the path on Google Earth... that will show you if the GPS is accurate or not. If people did this in reviews they would realize that the Samsung is poor and so is the Iphone. The HTC Desire performs great.

The initial lock (TTFF) means nothing if it is fast but then the gps cannot hold to enough number of satellites with good SnRs and keeps losing synch.

          Shame, shame

Audio Quality - please! There are some really (audio) poor shiny devices and I would not like to see the Acer among them.

Great review as always GSM Arena. I have never had any problems with any Acer products and love the brand. With my next upgrade I will definitely give the Acer Stream another look, and I am sure I will not be disappointed.

                        5th!

Its actually a decent first effort from them. I think this is one of the more sleeker android phone that I have seen. They shouldnt give up Acer has the resources to make a serious play in years to come.
