Motorola MILESTONE XT720 review: Android sidearm

24 August 2010
The original MILESTONE was the lifeline by which Motorola pulled themselves out of their deathbed. And now the once ailing giant breathes again – but is in no mood to rest or make peace. Instead, it’s breathing fire on...

Hi guys,

can anyone tell me does XT720 have motion sensor?
Can I play motion sensible games on it?

        I have one.
Build and feel good, but overwhelmed by problems.
Worst: microusb so loose that it takes effort to get it to charge. If connected to a PC, this is likely to result in the phone rebooting whenever the cable is touched.

next worst: camera takes so long to response to shutter button I thought it was broken. Thats with IS and face recog off. Video can only record 1m 15s at once.

bad: boot is signed, can't upgrade to non-motorola software.
Does not support UTMS on 850Mhz

        Don't recommend.

Question for GSM Arena: How come you in this review state that "Motorola promises to deliver FroYo in due course", where did you get this information? Motorola swears that they never have promised this, and has told us XT720 owners to "go f**k ourselves, we will never give you FroYo, though shit crybaby!" I, and many with me, bought this phone in belief of getting FroYo, one of the things that mislead us was GSM Arena's misinformation

has anyone had any issues yet with the micro usb cover? the thing seems pretty flimsy from just general use. i suspect it wont survive the life of this phone which is concerning. other than that, the phone is a treasure, at least as far as anything else cincinnati bell has to offer

"It appears that the video performance could suffer due to the performance of the microSD card, not the camera sensor itself. As ‘Memory Card Man’ in the comments section points out, THE SPEED CLASS OF YOUR STORAGE CARD COULD DETERMINE THE QUALITY OF THE VIDEO you record with it. The phone comes with a Class 2 8GB microSD card, so be sure to go out and grab yourself a Class 6 or higher (but Class 6 should be enough) if you plan on using this for video quite often."

I love my phone . I have no issues with video recording at all. However the phone is slower at some points like camera snaps .Its a little heavy and andriod still has some missing features (somehow no mobile OS has been as complete as the sony ericsson OS on its walkman and kseries phones).

MdN, 25 Aug 2010Look at the specs for Droid X: "This is not a GSM phon... moreGSM like CDMA is also an endangered species and has been replaced by WCDMA and soon LTE so maybe GSM Arena needs to have a name change to something like MobileTech Areana.

Mohit, 16 Sep 2010it has a 550mhz proceesor and not 720. Slow. Not anymore. European version is now 720mhz with latest software upgrade ota. Faster than the sony ericsson X10 on Quadrant benchmark.

                            > No DivX or XviD video support

So what exactly is the point of having HD 720p output to HDMI when one cannot play the films? Epic fail.

core, 27 Aug 2010Because the moto dext in europe isn't saling good so moto ... moreI shouldn't have to root a device just to enjoy the latest updates - especially since Moto had previously promised the update in this case. I take your point (or, at least, what I think was your point) that many manufacturers don't upgrade their handset OS, but it normally takes longer for them to stop support than the 6 months it took Moto to ditch the DEXT (and CLIQ).

Because the moto dext in europe isn't saling good so moto decided that it won't update that cell, if u want u can allways download non original android eclair with other eyecandy and have it all. Other manufacturers like htc , samsung , sony ericsson aren't ditching their handsets whene they are off the hook. Pleas tatto , magic , g1, galaxy 7500 , innov 8 , omnia hd and so on. Pls check the cell manufacturers and then say something bright.

Anonymous, 26 Aug 2010Its not necessarily something that should be in the review,... moreThis is EXTREMELY worth mentioning, the poster is 100% right, the cliq came out in november and as early as december was buzzin to get 1.6, now that 2.1 and even 2.2 have since been released the cliq is STILL sitting on it's original 1.5 build, with the same "rumored" update status. Funny thing is, motorolla annouced in Q1 that the cliq would get the 1.6 update in "Q2", now, still on 1.5, motorolla is claiming the same phone will get the 2.1 update in "Late Q3 early Q4".

                                      Really Moto?

                                      I've since grabbed an HTC,

Its not necessarily something that should be in the review, perhaps, but its worth mentioning: Motorola are terrible at supporting their handsets after launch, and have already - with their Android phones- developed a reputation for ditching phones shortly after release. The Motorola DEXT being a prime example of a fairly decent phone, thats no longer supported and won't be getting Android updates even to 2.1. Chances are, the same will; happen with this phone.
