Nokia N8 preview: First look

05 October 2010
We were almost starting to suspect mobile phones of giving up and playing soft. They seemed unstoppable you know. They went from 5 to 12 in no time and there was nothing to suggest that digicams will ever get a timeout for a much needed breather...

Oncom, 08 Oct 2010Then why would you buy a new car if you can still drive you... moreThat analogy does not even make any sense. What he is saying is true; Symbian is behind in the OS war. Symbian will be the limiting factor in what the N8 could do and sell.

Pride is man's downfall and Nokia is too proud to use a free OS in Android. Anyone else (I am one) got suckered into getting a Symbian S60 5th edition phone? Now you have to hope that Symbian^3 gets the kind of app development that iOS and Android have seen.

The formula that Samsung, LG, and to a lesser extent Motorola are using seems to be the one going forward:

Use an OS from a company that makes OSes on your flagship phones.
Use your inhouse OS on your midrange and low end phone.

I wonder how long it will be until Nokia wises up.

Nothing big different nowaday cars with 1950s. They boths use internal combustion engine, use accumulator to start the engine, has brake pedal, need transmition.

Anonymous, 08 Oct 2010Dude did u get the N8 ??.. im guessing NO ! .. So thats... moreYou have tried everything out there huh? Right. Gives you as much credibility as a kid with chocolate around his mouth in a candy store.

The fact of the matter remains this: The Nokia N95 was at the TOP of all smartphones. No question.

The Nokia N8 is not. It is not a game changer. It is not the "best" if there is such a thing. Is it a bad phone? I do not know but I would not think so. Ultimately when you compare the brains behind the phone that is the biggest problem it has.

Anonymous, 08 Oct 2010Has anyone actually tried using this phone? The OS is to... moreYes and at least for me it seemed plenty fast. Sure iPhone is probably still more smooth, but it is fast enough to not be any kind of a problem. The thing most people call slow is the home screens which is actually done on purpose.

The phone differentiates between swiping a widget and swiping the screen, thus the transition begins only after the sweep. Use the dots at bottom for faster changes.

To give example of something neither Android or iPhone does, it offers real multitasking and UI that fully rotates between landscape and portait. Don't really get this "doesn't offer anything new" part anyway. OS is there to do its job, not to amaze you with flashy effects for example.

No, the N8 does not need to have all the best stuff, but let us not pretend that it does. Just read through all the nonsense comments you see in here and you will see more dillusional comments than derogatory ones.

Has anyone actually tried using this phone?

The OS is too slow as it is, and doesn't offer anything new. You can put a 20mp camera with Xenon, and be able to make calls from Mars but you're going to drive a lot of people away with the sub standard OS.

I'm afraid Android has beaten Symbian like Ike beat Tina.

nicksti, 08 Oct 2010I am trolling? Your list is rediculous Nicksti, I know y... morePoor fella, you really want to hate Nokia right?

Call quality & antenna are pretty obvious, Nokia has always been at the top of that game since they have invented large parts of it. They have by far have the most patents it the related techs. Every N8 review that mentions them compliments them. Lets just say you would be hard pressed to find better.

I totally disagree with the USB OTG. It is a game changer. Especially in a multimedia device like this one. One of the biggest problems I have with iPhone is locking file transfer into cable & iTunes combo.

N8 plays for example H.264 (base profile, main profile, high profile),DivX, MPEG-4,M-JPEG , VC-1(WMV), Sorenson Spark (H.263, Real video 10, Matroska, Flash Lite 4, Flash 10 video, On2 VP6. If you want to argue how about finding one other phone that plays even those. N8 is also the first actual phone with Dolby Digital 5.1. If you want to argue, how about example of one coming before it?

That was FM-transmitter BTW, you do understand the difference between transmitter and receiver right? N8 has both. Nokia 5130 mX certainly does not.

I'm not going to go into the Exchange support, lets just say it rarely works well with most manufacturers and N8 seems to do a great job.

I agree that there are phones out there that might have one or two of these but thats it. You asked why would one get N8, one answer is to get these in one package.

Easily the best phone I've ever tried when I try look it as widely as I can. Not cos it's actually best at something, but it does SO many things SO well.

Also suits my personal needs the best. Stuff like USB OTG are now things I will not trade away ever again. If a phone will not have USB OTG, I wont buy it, it's my new minimum requirement after getting used to it on the N8 :D

Phones are alot about personal preference at the moment. If one doesnt do anything but browser non-flash sites and play games, I'd recomment the iPhone.

But if one has uses for the HW features of the N8 and does relatively lot of things with his phone, then I'd have to say that N8 really is maybe the best balanced phone out there till this day.

I've had it for over a week now and I'm very very satisfied at it's capabilities. Maybe not the prettiest or the fastest, but I bought it for it's capabilities, not to get the fastest or prettist OS/UI. The OS isn't slow though, I'm very satisfied with the speed as well.

Just cos some other phone would do something better, doesn't mean others completely suck at it. That's the N8s strenght. It's like a swiss army knife. Doesn't really master anything but the camera pretty much, but does ALOT of things very well, even if not the best.

Why should the N8 best every phone out there? You used several different phones there to beat N8 in something. That's stupid. The N8 is a very well balanced phone and that's the biggest strenght of it. Of course you will always find a some model that does something better.

It works both ways, no matter what phone you use, I can find a model that did something better than yours. Not to mention many of these things are personal preferences.

I have bought their phones till the Samsung wave, and still it feel thats its an OS that wants to sell.. there is no consideration to the user, plus KIES is not working properly, another disturbing thing is that it looks like it just copies operating systems and throws in the market .. im not bashing Samsung, just saying why i stopped buying from them.

List of things N8 does better than others

                                    -Free offline worldwide navigation
-Best call quality : and you measured this?
-Best reception : again you measured this?
-UI that fully changes between lanscape and portrait modes
-Best/largest audio/video codec support : give me the list vs others
-USB On-The-Go : Nokia gave us this is 6600 slide. Hardly a game changer
-FM transmitter (I love this on my N900) : LOL. You can get this in cheap phones like Nokia 5130 mX
-HDMI out : Late to the party, lowly Moto beat you to it
-Dolby surround out : Nothing new
-Most customizable UI (except for Nokia N900) : Rubbish fanboy comment
-Real multitasking (on par with several others) : you really want to talk about Symbian as an OS vs others?
-Best battery life out of current top end smartphones (thanks to OS) : I question that 12.5hrs talk and only 5 on 3G
-Best Microsoft Exchange support (on par with WinMo) : how do you know?
-Lots of OS features that other manufacturers don't have, things like rSAP (remote access to SIM card) etc

Symbian^3 is far behind the other OSes like iOS and Android and a comparison should never be brought up. Simple truth is the N95 was the pinnacle of smartphones back then. Nokia is no longer at the top and makes its money on non N series phones and in Asia markets which have large populations. Nokia, just go Android and be in the game.

As Nokia said, N8s preorders exceeded every previous preorder records they've ever had.

Now think a company the size of Nokia that has been in the business for some 30-40 years. That record most likely wasn't small to begin with.

Also have to remember that big crowds such as India just got the ability to preorder a short time ago, while it has been doable in europe for a long time. Why? I don't know, but trust me, the show hasn't even started yet.
