Zune software review: Syncing in Zune

22 November 2010
We don’t often review software, but it was almost unavoidable in this case – the Zune desktop software is an inseparable part of the Windows Phone 7 experience. Since we already have a couple of WP7 phone reviews under our belt...

Converting everything to .wmv is a no go for me. This is even worse than iphone. Mass storage is the way.

The Zune program dose has a few pit falls like they've mentioned. However it's was designed oringally for a media player, not a phone. I don't really agree with Microsofts choice to adapt that for phone use. The program though is really something amazing, its great to use, and it really is untouchable when it comes to finding new bands or music that you may not have heard of. It'll almost do like a Pandora.com thing and recommend other bands based of what you've already got. I've been using the Zune program with it's respective Zune media player for years now since it was first released about 5 years ago now. It just keeps getting better. I don't know much about WP7 yet, but I though it took an Andriod apporach to contacts and just did like a wireless auto-sync to your Live.com account? Anyways, the program is amazing I'll just leave it at that, however I don't think it's a good choice for phones unless there's an update in the works for it.

I'm in two minds about the requirement that you sync contacts and media separately. For the moment I think it's a good thing, as it's basically a separation of low- and high-data content. It's easy and quick to synchronise contacts, notes and calendar information over any wireless service. Plus many smartphone users rely on their Outlook and other business tools for managing their contacts and their time already.

One thing about media encoding though, for the Zune/WP7 users: what happens when you have a video in your library that fits the spec required by the phone/player already, but wasn't downloaded from the Marketplace? Does it get re-recoded, or does the software see that it'll play and just transfer it? Those of us with plenty of *ahem* home movies know how to set up massive transcoding batch jobs to suit whatever device, after all...

why people, 23 Nov 2010actually does not like sync apps like itunes, zune or other ... moreYou can set Zune to sync automatically if you'd prefer it that way. You're not obligated to sync manually.

Yes I agree, it's a pity ZUNE did not Sync Contacts & Calendar otherwise I would have purchased WP7 phone instead of an Android device. I'm still a little concerned about security using cloud services irrespective of the OS and would have preferred syncing Outlook & CRM via USB at least in the short term until I get my mind set around using 3rd party solutions for for on-line syncing. I guess I have to wait another two to three years before I look at WP7 & ZUNE again. In fact omitting USB connectivity with Outlook has given me the opportunity to explore Android - very impressive so far.

actually does not like sync apps like itunes, zune or other pc suit apps ?

i store music on iTunes, edit them, convert them to aac, put them album arts, make playlist and when i connect my ipod to itunes i get all those things to my ipod automatically. also following software updates, app updates and surfing on the app store on the same software is superb. tv shows, radios, genius feature, now ping and lots of usefull stuff there.

i am sure zune software does the same things maybe much more but people choose putting all those stuff manually by drag and drop. i can't understand cause it is harder for me.

How can you say this is a good thing when it's exactly what iTunes is to iPhone??? And this doesn't even half as much as iTunes.

part of the reason android is passing ios out much momentum is people hatred of using itunes for every bloody thing when connecting an iphone to a computer, its a symbol of apples draconian control measures. And now wp7 is following suit with something similar........hmmmmm

When someone comes over to our home, i play some songs using zune, and put the vga output on our fullhd tv

                              and boy

OH ITS BEAUTIFUL, when it plays a song in fullscreen, it automatically shows pictures from that artist on backgrond, and on the foreground it shows the lyrics and band history and everything about it in a metro style, its so beautiful, an artwork, kudos to zune team for their awesome job

And between, zune software is the best music player ever, blows the bloatware itunes out of water
I wish zune software would sync with my iphone, microsoft never released zune players in our country

You can actually disassociate libraries from the sync folders now with 4.7. It's under sync groups, on the bottom. That will let you manually select folders you want the Zune software to monitor. I think you couldn't when it was first introduced in 4.5.

                                      +1 T-ara fan!

a truly useful review. ones must interface with a smart device to use it properly. The interface can make or break the user experience. I would love to see a comaprison test between multiple options available. topics to include; software interaction with other PC software, ease of setup, bandwidth requirements for software maintenenace. I haven't encountered any interface software that comes close to competing with "USB mass storage mode" for simplicity & flexibility.
