Samsung Galaxy Note preview: First look

30 September 2011
They used to be big, later they became redundant. As soon as smartphones were ready to offer the same features, PDAs were on the way to becoming extinct. With a device like the Samsung Galaxy Note though, one can't help but wonder if they're...

I've always believed that the optimal smartphone will have the biggest screen possible while still fitting in a shirt pocket. The Dell Streak was too early to market, but the Galaxy Note could be a game changing final form factor for all these phones. I know right now people think it odd to see someone talking on these big phones...but at some point I think people will think it odd to see people using anything smaller than these phones.

its all about what you need. I have SE Arc at this moment, but understood that i need a bigger screen, because Im using phone for browsing and watching movies about 40% at work. Notebooks and tablets would bee too big because i need to stay mobile. 5.3" is the best that suits me.

This isn't too big for a phone. It just needs a big pocket for its big heart.

@mino: probably not. if it's a wacom pen, it probably works (only) with their (over-patented over-priced) electromagnetic induction technology. And probably that also explains why it's so expensive.

But it might work as in.. the tablet/other phone registers the pen tip pressing on the screen (depending on screen type), but don't expect the coils to work for accurate pointing precision or any pressure sensitivity.

@jerry: god, reading that gave me a headache. spellcheck is your friend. it comes pre-installed with firefox. USE IT.

I reckon you'll see these popping up on ebay relatively cheap soon. People will have them as upgrades. not realising how big they are, and selling them on.

I really want one. The old N97's long past its best

Choppy scrolling might make user experience a tiny bit less enjoyable, but it's definitely not making the device less functional.

And besides, the text needs to STAY STILL while you are reading it anyway :)

I personally would rate PenTile matrix displays as being _a lot_ more annoying, especially that it's giving you headaches all the time, not only when navigating.

                                >>Perhaps not a device you think you'll need. But one you're going to want.

ohhhhhhhh, why yes, absolutely DO WANT this gorgeous phone!!

I was still in doubt a bit about the pentile matrix (and not being able to find and look at a pentile display with similar dpi in real life made things harder). But if gsmarena says it should be tolerable, then I too should stop worrying.

Had worries about the camera too, but after seeing the samples, I don't anymore.

And I hope they make SMALLER keyboards tha tyou can attach to the phone. Samsung's large wireless keyboards are just ridiculous.

The pen response while drawing also seemed a bit slow on the pre-production models, but that's most likely just a soft problem, since the cpu seems powerful enough. Needs a bit of tweaking and optimization.

I really enjoyed this review, thanks, gsmarena!

                                  I so want this phone.
Sure, I might need to use a holster-bag I got at home, to carry it around.
But the resolution and the size of the screen, would actually get me started on mobile browsing.

But the best thing is the pen. I do a lot of notes, and a keyboard does not cut it.

I hope I can find a small Bluetooth keyboard about the same width as the phone in landscape, to use for writing long texts.

I would be such a great tool.
Sure, I wish there was a device like this running full linux os.

Can ... moreI must say I'm with you here: good camera and simple phone features are all that some of us need. Good camera is a must if you like to catch special moments, wifi and gps are welcome of course, but smartphone possibilities with all the vulnerability a smartphone encompasses (viruses, secret surveillance by phonemaking companies themselves, unreliability of OS and hardware etc) are not necessary in everyday life. Smartphones with their vast number on apps are fantastic, but in everyday life I would like to use just a good feature phone with good camera: more reliable, more pocketable (than tablet-sized phones at least) and with longer battery life.
