I agree. The phone is clearly aimed at a niche market - the fitness and outdoors type - but the review skims over or ignores the features that those interested would want to hear more about.
Conceding that they tested the water resistance, that still leaves the other two ratings - dust and shock resistance. I think this comment from GSMArena shows just how misfocussed their review was of this phone:
"We didn't test the drop resistance of the Xperia active because we didn't want to scar that pretty face."
And, 'boring', I think you were being generous when you said 1/2 a page for the sports software - more like 5 lines. Curious considering the first paragraph of the review mentions "plenty of sporty apps". No screenshots and no comment on functionality when combined with the ANT+ feature. Mainly just some generalised 'What is ANT+?' info.
I know I would've liked to have at least heard an impression on the battery life when used with one or more ANT+ connections and the GPS. Surely these features are a primary selling point and people would like to know if they'll still be able to make a phone call after a 2-3+ hour run/ride.
A note that GSMArena's unit had to be charged daily when pushed - pushed meaning "the usual workload of browsing, imaging tests and benchmarks with the phone constantly connected to both wireless and 3G" - may be great for establishing a fair basis for comparing it to other phones but, in my opinion, fails to satisfy the target user. Putting the phone to work, as I imagine was intended by SE, to track routes, workouts and display speed and cadence is far removed from being constantly connected to Wi-Fi running benchmarking tests.
Generally speaking, I do think GSMArena provide decent reviews of handsets and devices, albeit understandably repetitive at times, but when presented with a niche phone like the active they do need, as 'boring' suggested, to adopt a more flexible approach to their review methodology and cater for the unique features and intended uses of the device.

I'm sorry but what you said is only wishful words, go one and look for the current market share and check out how SE is insignificant in the market nowadays.
Don't get me wrong, I do like Sony Ericsson, but that's simply the truth. :)

all that is good, one additional feature both motorola and sony ericsson missed adding in these rugged phones is an inductive charging capability (wireless chargers). as we all know how power hungry the androids are. frequent opening of the lid covering the charge port, may lead to it snapping off. as a defy user can vouch for this feature.

awesome fone...but than 2bad there s no secondary cam...but still awesome cos of its features...wud be able to take t anywhere without damaging it...that better than having secondary cam...

There's no sense on a phone where you can't use it on any situation... But if YOU don't care about it or you live your whole life inside of your home, then you shouldn't care about it, but it still a cons that have to be mentioned for those who don't use their phone only like toys...
About the viewing angles I disagree again, most screens with poor viewing angles won't give you privacy, it will only distort the colors and the contrast, but still you can read what's on the screen, so it's not by any means and advantage to have a phone with limited viewing angles, meanwhile, with good viewing angles you can see properly what is on your phone when it's on a desk, you can share content with other people without image degradation or can shot picture on unusual angles...
About the screen size, I agree though...

I love this phone!
I really dont want a clumpsy big screen phone, 3.7" is max for me, maybe 4" if i can still operate it with one hand, but I thought 3" was too small.. Until I tested it.
Ive compared it to the Defy (Defy+ is the same phone as Defy but with a bigger battery and overclocked processor!) and while the Defy has a bigger screen which makes typing more comfortable, the screen is almost useless in sunlight and the rubber protectors on the sides breaks easily, the screen itself easily gets shattered and the whole plastic of it made me go... NAAAAhhhh (and i didnt even mention the painful motoblur experience).
The Xperia Active however is full body aluminium, fantastic screen, good camera and, to me most important, FANTASTIC AUDIO (the Digital Audio Converter is awesome!)!
Ive had this phone for 3 weeks now and everything just works as it should, and the battery life is not sub-par as they say in this review.
I recommend this phone to everyone!

7 1/2 pages of text for boring tech features and only 1/2 for the sports software of the phone. Did you do your research? Of course this is a phone that doesn't have the most powerful processor or the biggest screen. It's meant for sports.
You have to learn to have a different approach for each review.

I think Gsmarena should STOP talking about screen size and viewing angles fron a bad/good perspective. You can't say a phone's screen is bad/good only on you personal likes or dislikes. Some people prefer big screens other prefer small ones...For some small viewing angles are an advantage for privacy. It's not for you Gsmarena to decide here and now that a phone has a bad screen on these 2 parameters: size and angles.
