Sony Xperia S preview: Game on

02 March 2012
In staging their grand return, Sony Mobile could've done a lot worse than the Xperia S. The fresh divorcees are back on the market, their new Xperia flagship kindly supplying the bang. And while the HD screen and dual-core processor are not exactly...

When will GSM Arena finally change their attitude or state clearly why they are mentioning two versions!!
THEIR is only one (1) version, and it is a quad band hspa. Just chech their website. When you get your hands on a retail version, you will notice that.

AnonD-21645, 04 Mar 2012I think you've missed my point... I actually agree with you... moreFrom the comments made, you've not held, felt or used the Xperia S before

It has a radio, and for most people, the inbuilt memory is sufficient, although it's understandable that the lack of expandable memory hurts when it comes to redundant static memory items like music and movies and whatnot

The XS was built with ICS in mind, and having owned mine for 2 weeks and using the GB firmware on it while running the ICS beta on my arc S, there's no doubt that feeling that GB was just slapped on to hold the tide till ICS comes out (which I can say, is soon, earlier than the other manufacturers releasing their units)... The XS just feels incomplete

Even though GB felt slapped onto the XS, the firmware overall still feels well optimized, which is a very important point. Specs are merely half the equation, or even less, and there's more to it than that

One thing to note however, was that Sony just released a firmware update (still 2.3.7) for the XS a few days ago, improves performance smoothness and battery consumption

Different folks, different strokes, the XS was built with multimedia connectivity and entertainment in mind, something other Droids out there in the market do not have from the get go, even though they support DLNA

One thing to note would be that most Droid users (>99%) wouldn't even change their launchers due to lack of knowhow or the existence of such things, it's only the select few that would, and an even rarer amount that'd flash custom ROMs onto their units

While the XS may not be an incremental upgrade over the SGS2, in more ways than one, those upgrades are decent, especially when the manufacturers pays more attention to the user at hand (though not to the level of the earlier HTC Sense layouts)

I actually agree with you... moreI Wrote a comment asking GSMarena why it performs so poorly in their benchmark tests, equal or worse than sgsIII and Galaxy Nexus, when it crush those phones and everything else in all other benchmark tests ive seen. They have not responded to that yet..... Thing is, Xperia S is in fact the fastest phone on the market right now! All other reviewers test show that.

I don't understand why Sony need to design this phone like this, why pregnant at the back, why don't just make it flat? :(

Really ugly at the back, like hunchback sideways. That's why whatever they do, they cannot kill iPhone, because iPhone design is so simple and elegant. :(

AnonD-35482, 03 Mar 2012you're so right....NOT! Sammy's SGS2 has a VERY boring ... moreI think you've missed my point... I actually agree with you (to some degree...) let's take a look shall we?

"Sammy's SGS2 has a VERY boring and ugly UI."

Totally agree here - but UI is easily remedied by using one of the launcher apps (adw, etc.) but I agree, it LOOKS boring...

"The built is generally poor with cheap feel, thanks to its cheap plastic back."

Actually, although it doesn't LOOK premium, it is actually incredibly well built - I accidentally put mine in the washing machine (I know!) and after a tumble / spin, there wasn't a scratch on it and it still works perfectly. After that I had a lot of respect for the build of it..

"The audio quality is so-so and camera quality is not top quality. I immediately dispose mine after a month."

The camera is actually really good, far exceeds any HTC (I've had HTC and my friend has a top-range one, their pictures are TERRIBLE and HTC is renowned for bad camera..) Audio quality, I listen to music on mine and radio every day (walking to work) - not an issue at all...

"its a benchmark monster alright, but the browsing speed and multitasking capability is almost the same with Motorola and HTC in real life. "

Simply not true, I'm a mobile fan - love playing with other people's phones and trying them out, I can honestly say after playing with the latest moto and HTC - no phone that came out last year was even a patch on GS2...

"I enjoy my HTC Sensation XE more than iPhone or SGS2. HTC One X is not perfect, but if you don't want to be bashed, you don't compare SGS2 to newer phones who are as good in terms of horsepower but waaaaaay waaay more fun, gorgeous and tougher like Xperia S, Droid Razr, HTC Sensation Xe, so how much more if you compare it to quad cores?"

Bottom line is - that whatever phone you go for, it has to be right for YOU, whatever manufacturer... The problem with the Xperia S in particular is that it doesn't appear as fast as last year's phones AND the complete lack of external memory is a killer.. Yes GS2 is VERY boring in both design and UI - but with a case and a launcher, these can be rectified... what you can't change are the specs INSIDE a phone, and no matter how good a phone LOOKS, if it doesn't even have a radio, or enough storage to use properly, OR not even the processing power of phones released a year ago, there's nothing you can do about that... you're sacrificing functionality for looks, and that suits some people (there's no right and wrong here) but ultimately, a flagship that can only just compete to last year's phones is, to my mind, going to fail... because people like myself want to feel like they've 'upgraded' and not 'downgraded' for the sake of appearances...

Seriously GSMArena, cut the stupid "quad core" hype and get real. No one needs a quad core on their laptops, never mind on their phones - power efficient laptops still use dual cores.

Sony have even said that their next flagship device (after the Xperia S) will be using dual Cortex A15 cores, as this offered both better performance and power efficiency than quad Cortex A9 cores:
